AIBU?

Should we fly with a tummy upset? *bit gross

DD(6y/o) and I are flying to Ireland to see her grandparents in a few hours. But we both have a tummy bug I think. She is sound asleep now but she has had a few "knickers incidents" this evening and I am running to the loo every 20 minutes with it coming from my mouth and bumBlush.
Should we go ahead with it as planned or is this too much hassle?
I am actually afraid of running out of underwear for her and myself.Or an embarrassing scene on board the flight.

Thanking You.

The rule of thumb of D&V bugs is to allow 48 hours between most recent incident and being in close contact with others. Personally I wouldn't fly as I wouldn't be able to justify the risk I could be posing to someone who was immunodeficient/pregnant/otherwise compromised.

I don't think so besides the massive risks of passing what sounds like novovirus to huge amounts of people remember that the toilets will mostly be locked on the flight as it is mostly going up or down.

Do you have travel insurance?

Would you even want to leave house with d&v like that? ....
I'd so nix on the flying thing, and also no trains, no driving, no saying hello to neighbours in passing. Just get in your beddie!!!

Even if you weren't risking making others I'll, what would happen if you needed the bathroom during the flight and the seatbelt sign was on so you couldn't go?

Wow that was selfish of me.i never thought about maybe contaminating some with a weak immune system. That is not good news because i need the loo a lot.it might be food poisoning because we had fish today for lunch and DH and Ds dint have it and are fine.no I didnt bother with the insurance either like a clown.

As someone with a compromised immune system I don't think that you should.
As already stated, 48 hours should pass without incident before contact with others, with regard to school etc, so why should you going on a plane be any different?

I think it would be absolutely miserable for you both and potentially hugely embarrassing. And that is before you count the risk to other people...and DD's grandparents when you arrive.

Yeah you guys are right.its not fair on anyone else who is near us.Thank you all so much.God i feel awful.I am now sat on the loo nearly 20 minutes browsing my phone waiting on the next bum explosion.

I wouldn't even go to the supermarket with d&v, hate the thought that I might pass something so unpleasant on to a healthy person let alone someone immunocompromised.

Yes please don't do this, not only would it be deeply unpleasant for you both it could end up being messy and very damaging for people like my son and I with compromised immune systems. Just getting to the airport and moving through it could make a great number of people very sick.
Can you check online to see if you can rebook for a few days time?

I hope you both manage a good night sleep.

Hope you feel better soon. I find eating a banana or some toast in these situations at least gives you some energy for the battle and something to bring up when you would usually have moved to the dry heaves.

Thank you so much for not flying. I have a chronic condition which means potential kidney failure if I get D&V...I know I won't be able to avoid it entirely but something for others to think about in these situations x hope you feel better soon x

In my last pregnancy I caught a d&v bug, it was going around and people weren't keeping their kids home for the 48hrs. I started throwing up at 5pm and by 9pm was in an ambulance on my way to hospital because I became very dehydrated, very quickly. I'm pregnant again and absolutely dreading d&v season in case it happens again.

Right now, fluids are more important for you and your DD than food. Sips of water or flat lemonade, ice cubes, ice pops, etc. Even jelly will help get your fluids up because it reverts back to liquid in the stomach.

Once you do feel like eating again then raisins are good, sugar and carbs and not too heavy on your tummy.

Marshallows are amazing at helping ease D&V. My MIL recommend them (she's a nurse) they are apparently difficult enough for your to break down so that they dont run through you which gives your body longer to sort itself out. Since finding out that, we've always had a packet in our medicine box (looks really weird!)

Glad you aren't flying- I hope you feel better later today.

Yes, thank you for not flying. I don't have a compromised immune system but it still seems a bit unfair that even relatively healthy passengers could have their holidays ruined with a bug they should have been able to avoid.

Stay home and feel better soon. I had it when I was pregnant too and it doesn't last long but is unholy while it's here so you have my sympathy.

With it coming out if my mum and mouth every 20 mins the last thing I would want to be is an airport and plane. You will contaminate everyone else, there might be vulnerable people on the flight. You will contaminate your sister and family. Don't go!

NO! Firstly, both you and your kid are going to be strapped into your seats and unable to get to the loo for take-off and landing. At least 20mins at each end of the flight. Secondly, these toilets are cleaned with wipes until the "deep-clean" at the end of the day. You could be responsible for infecting the passengers and crew. Thirdly - very few people understand the effects of pressurization on your body. Just like a packet of crisps, when you are ascending, all the spaces inside your body swell up. (This is when crisp packets burst) When you descend, air is forced out of your digestive system at both ends. (Bottles end up collapsing in on themselves during descent, and people are always busting to pee because their bladders decrease in size as well). You really don't want this happening when you are not entirely confident that you can control what follows it. I was a flight attendant for years and the number of times there have been really nasty surprises left on seats (liquid AND solid) by passengers who skulk off with their jumpers tied around their waist is horrifying. Please don't.

Glad you didn't fly, you did the right thing, even if you and dd had had no further symptoms. As it is, I'm sorry you're still so ill, hope you and dd feel much better soon (and that the coach is ok!). If you don't feel up to laundry, can someone deliver you a couple of packs of cheap knickers for you both? You could just say you're too ill to do anything even laundry if you don't want to elaborate about accidents.
