AIBU?

why has it just taken me 45 minutes to tidy one cupboard? Is it me?

Every cupboard and drawer in my house has four of five pieces of random Lego, most monsters, happy meal toys, vital game pieces, and other various shit. I can't tidy any room quickly as otherwise I end up with a box full of shit I then have to redistribute around the house and that takes FUCKING hours as well.

Is it me? Am I missing something? I've used the Marie kondo method and I've sold hundreds of pounds worth of stuff on gumtree, I've tried desperately to pare everything down to the absolute bare minimum and I'm still swimming in stuff.

Help me!!!!

This sounds exactly like our house! No matter how much I declutter, there are bits and pieces everywhere!

Sorry, no help, but empathising and following Smile

You're not tidying a room...you're sorting individual drawers which is a separate job in itself.

I never reorganise on a day when rooms need a good tidy and clean. You do the contents of cupboards etc on the day AFTER you've done a general tidy and clean.

I find that any household chore takes me three times longer than necessary because I am a bit of a perfectionist. So it will take me an hour to hoover because I will need to pull all the furniture out to make sure it's done properly- then I decide I don't have an hour so it doesn't get done Blush

In reality I could simply swish the Hoover round the whole house in 15-20 minutes Hmm

It's not just you! I can totally relate to this.

but I can't ever clean because there is so much mess everywhere! Every surface has thousands of things on (possibly slight pmt exaggeration) and I can't bear making piles of shit and then having to go through them after I've cleaned. I've been just throwing things away this morning. It feels amazing

What I do:

Start with a number of boxes. Put lego in one, pens in another, etc etc until that press is sorted. Then move onto the next press and use the same boxes from the original press.

Eventually you have to start using bigger boxes to fit everything in, but in the end all the pens are in one box, all the lego etc.

Same here OP. I read Kondo, decluttered, but still can't seem to keep my house tidy. I re-read Kondo occasionally, as a distraction from my actual house, because just reading it makes me feel calm and organised Grin. I have no problem throwing things away, but it doesn't seem to help long-term. Maybe I just need to be much more ruthless.

Cupboard tidying does take that long. I quite like doing it as long as it isn't being redone all the time. It's relaxing!

I expect Konmari would say you need to change where your categories are stored if it's not sticking. Remember to make things easy to put away rather than easy to get out.

I start off with boxes surrounding me and whatever I'm tidying out - 1 for dd, 1 for dh, 1 for charity, 1 to sell, 1 to go to the rubbish tip.

Bung it all in the bin! Give your family a warning..and a box each....make sure they know it's a REAL warning. Then anything not gone the next day is binned.

BAM!

Only works if family is old enough to tidy things away User

Cupboards and drawers can be shut. Therefore it doesn't exist - wheee! Time for a cup of tea.

A sort of Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal kind of thinking.

The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal is acknowledged to be mind-bogglingly stupid though. Its sort of thinking is nit necessarily to be recommended. Grin

Mother, that is my house frequently. I've jus had major decoration done and there is loads of stuff in cupboards now.

45 minutes sounds quick to me.
For me it would take about 2hours to empty all out, sort into piles. Then remember that someone is coming round and throw it all back in, finding that now it doesn't all fit back in despite the huge black bin liner full of stuff I've put in the bin and the three sack loads going to charity/friends...
