My DH keeps buying tons of chopped toms that need a tin opener rather than the ring pull type as I've asked him. He does the shopping every week, I do all the cooking and use tins and tins of chopped toms (spag Bol, chilli etc etc). It drives me mad to have to open them with a tin opener. I've asked and asked him to buy ring pull but he won't because they are (5p) more expensive. It gives me the RAGE! Buy the fucking ring pull!

And breathe.

I know IABU BTW.

Every time you need one opened just give them to your DH and get him to do it.

He said that! He's not in when I cook. I wouldn't mind if I could do that.

YNBU - I just said to DD the Ambrosia custard Ive just bought was not ring pull. How archaic! And time wasting, especially as our tin opener is rubbish.

I don't mind for most things. It because I use loads of chopped toms. I need to get over it!

Pop out yourself and just buy a trolley load of tinned tomatoes with ring pulls to store in the shed/ garage/ larder. Use those - no need to put them on shopping list - problem solved.

Buy a leccy can opener.

I open ring pulls from the bottom just to use it.

Where do you stand on tomatoes in cartons, out of interest?

Sounds like me tbh, even if the price difference was 1p I would still buy the ones that need a tin opener Grin

Oh well I've just had a tantrum because I've burnt the shit out of my favourite non stick pan for the third time in a week. Have told my dh that he's cooking from now on, starting with lunch which won't be soup.

Am sulking in the back room.

Tell your dh yoy are saving the tins for a nuclear winter and go out and buy some cartons of passata instead.

He went out again and bought 16 cartons - easy opening! I'm looking at this as an act of love rather than frustration. Although, all it's taught me is have a tantrum = get what I want. Hope he doesn't give in so easily with our two year old!

I just had a tantrum because the gig I wanted to go to has sold out and husband should have booked the tickets weeks ago, the fact that I could have booked them is completely irrelevant.

Totally on your side. I cook every day and use tinned toms a lot. I HATE tin openers and they hate me.

Where I shop, the unchopped are ring pull, the chopped are not so I take the chopped and actually don't mind the opening now. Like you I throw two tins into almost everything! Your dh sounds lovely tho :)

I could use a can opener when I was 8. The old fashioned ones. I used to like taking the lids off.

Shrugs.

Yabu. Tinned tomatoes are one of the things that I buy the cheapest ones possible. There's just no need to pay the extra. Those 5ps add up if you're using loads and loads of them!

Just get a decent tin opener.

I was going to say, get your dh to open a weeks' worth of tins when he's there and then put the contents in some smallish plastic containers and freeze them. You can get one a day out of the freezer and let it defrost through the day (sorry a bit boring I know! ).

BUT I would pay more because I dislike eating pesticides and fungicides which is what you get with the cheapest (non organic) ones. Oh and also you get producers who are ripped off big time.

yep - it all adds up
5p a can - 2 cans a day, 5 days a week - that's £26 a year... so working for approx 3.5 hrs at NMW...
But then you have to deduct the time taken to open said 520 cans...but I don't think it would take that long...
(bit of a boring sat afternoon here...trying to avoid doing the gardening Grin)

I tend to buy the cartons from Aldi or Lidl, but I also get the rage with cans that need a tin opener. Mainly because I hate our tin opener and can't find one of the old fashioned ones anywhere.

5p difference will have me grabbing all the non ring pull tins now..I buy loads too...Imagine, in a couple of weeks we might save enough for a bottle of vino with what we've saved ! Wink

Am I failing to understand something here?
Unless you have a problem like arthritis or are left handed what is the big deal about using a tin opener?

Report
gingerboy1912 · 29/10/2016 14:47

Go and buy a hugely expensive all singing all dancing tin opener to use on the 5p a tin cheaper tomatoes Grin
