To think acrylic nails on a 12 year old is really stupid?

Got home dsd proudly shows me her new nails, long pointy acrylics. I'm surprised that the nail place she went to agreed to do them and even more surprised that her mum paid for them.

So now I have a 12yr old dsd in a B cup padded push up bra (she doesn't naturally fill it) full face of make up including waxed and filled eyebrows and now the nails. Then she goes out with her friends like this.

AIBU to think this is a lot bit much? confused

TobleroneBoo Fri 28-Oct-16 17:28:27

Yes, it'll ruin her nails too

Mooey89 Fri 28-Oct-16 17:28:59

Ugh. YANBU.

IminaPickle Fri 28-Oct-16 17:29:05

Utterly ridiculous. Poor kid.

peppermac Fri 28-Oct-16 17:30:44

When ds1 was twelve he looked twelve and the girls looked 18+

Marshmallow92 Fri 28-Oct-16 17:35:40

YANBU. Still way too young, although I had a vague interest in nails at that age, it was never more than nail polish. She'll probably think she's the bees knees, it's not until you're older and look back and realise you're still just a baby!

Littlepeople12345 Fri 28-Oct-16 17:36:41

I'm sure I still played with my barbies at 12. I wouldn't let my dc have acrylics that young.
I have got my 11 year old some tacky stick on ones though

WaxingNinja Fri 28-Oct-16 17:38:17

YANBU.

The salon probably aren't insured for acrylic nails on a 12 year old. Fingers crossed her natural nails don't develop some horrible infection and drop off as she won't be getting any compensation if they do.

LolaStarr Fri 28-Oct-16 17:42:53

YANBU. I hate acrylics, they absolutely destroy your own nails. The salon should never have agreed to do them on a 12 year old!

BitchQueen90 Fri 28-Oct-16 17:43:34

YANBU I have acrylic nails and at the salon I go to they will only do polish on children. 12 is way too young.

Joolsy Fri 28-Oct-16 17:43:40

Well my DD's friend age 12 got hers done but found them to be a right pain! So your DSD might feel the same and not want them done again. But YANBU, far too young.

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 28-Oct-16 17:45:37

Won't her school expect her to remove them? DD's school doesn't even allow nail varnish, let alone acrylic nails.

ThePinkOcelot Fri 28-Oct-16 17:45:58

YADNBU. I'm currently trying to sort my nails after excessive acrylic use. They're wrecked!!

I hate to see young girls dressed up like that!

LazySusan11 Fri 28-Oct-16 18:31:57

I've spoken to dh who says he knew nothing about her having them until she came home today. I feel sad that she's so encouraged to grow up so quickly. She's 12 ffs!

BabyGanoush Fri 28-Oct-16 18:41:50

Poor girl

BradleyPooper Fri 28-Oct-16 18:49:25

Oh no, as the mother of a 12 yo I would not be happy. My 12 yo has just discovered Dr Martens and hairbraiding but not interested in make up. There are girls at school who are more into beauty but none of them have nails or brows. I am shocked that a nail technician would sell acrylics to a 12 yo but where is she getting the money for acrylics, hd brows and push up bras?

Bettybooop25 Fri 28-Oct-16 18:52:32

My daughter has hers done. She's 13.

leaveittothediva Fri 28-Oct-16 18:53:09

Hell no. sad

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers Fri 28-Oct-16 19:18:38

Jeebus, that upsetting OP. I hate seeing children dressed and made like they're trying to get a photo shoot for a tacky magazine. Whilst a 12 year old doesn't need to be in dungarees and carrying dollys, there is age appropriate and there's inappropriate. This is the latter.

Can you and DH work on self esteem wherever possible? That can't hurt, irrespective of the nails and push up bras. hmm

carmenta Fri 28-Oct-16 19:21:42

That's awful, she's only 12!

It'a difficult for your DH to comment on it as well, since girls tend to take their father as the role model for how others view them. If she's already that insecure then he probably needs to robustly stick to discussions of what she thinks and what she does, not what she looks like. Difficult sad

DieDeutschLehrerin Fri 28-Oct-16 19:23:20

I wouldn't be surprised if she is sent home from school and asked to have them removed. This happened at our school as they are an absolute liability in a science lab and a hazard in PE and technology too.

Flylittlebirdpdq Fri 28-Oct-16 19:26:25

Depends where you are in the country really.

Deepest darkest Essex here, lots of girls have their brows done at 11/12. Nails around 13

FarAwayHills Fri 28-Oct-16 19:34:38

Yes it's really stupid and tacky but not unusual these days I'm afraid.

My DD is a similar age and her friends are obsessed with brows and nails. I've just put my foot down on the nails - they are expensive so she can't afford them anyhow.

pontificationcentral Fri 28-Oct-16 19:41:48

My friend just did lash extensions on her 12yo dsd. The child is a beautiful ivory skinned naturally freckled kid with glorious flaming pumpkin coloured hair. And now jet black lengthy shaped eyelashes. She loves them, but I can't help feeling a bit sad.

Elphame Fri 28-Oct-16 19:45:27

No reputable salon would do acrylics on a 12 year old nor should they. The pressure on young girls to grow up so quickly is so sad.
