That our plumber would only deal with DH

Yesterday we had a plumber recommended to us to come and look at our boiler. As I've had a really busy week I asked DH to get in touch with him and sort out the times. When the plumber (looked late 50s) arrived my parents happened to be over. I showed plumber through to the kitchen, he diagnosed the problem then told me that he'd text the cost and breakdown details to my DH. I told him he could tell me but he insisted on texting DH as he had his number.
When I went to fetch the paperwork that the plumber wanted he filled DF in on the problem and even told him the cost but he still wouldn't tell me! I half jokingly told the plumber that DH wouldn't have been able to find the paperwork, but still he wouldn't discuss the technicalities! I'm quite taken aback as, and I'm lucky to say this, I've never dealt with this attitude before.
AIBU, was the plumber acting normally because DH had made the booking and I'm reading too much into this or is his attitude because I'm a woman?

Tha would piss me off enough to say no thanks and find another plumber.

You could maybe have said he just wanted to tell the person who made the booking but he told your dad! He's a dick.

We've recently employed a builder to do work for us and he does exactly the same thing. I wanted to know some details of our build so we called him round. We all (dh included) stood in the kitchen discussing it and he was incredibly vague. I found this weird. When dh saw him to the door, I'd stayed to start dishing up dinner, he had a full blown conversation on the driveway with dh about it all, everything I'd asked him, he answered only to dh!

Dh told him that he could have said inside but he just laughed it off. Thing is, I have to manage the build while dh works so sod knows how thats going to go with him behaving that way!

Yup. "I'm sorry. It sounds like you need a penis to receive a quote and breakdown details from you. No problem, I'll find a plumber who's happy to take money from the other 50% of the population. The door is that way."

TaliZorahVasNormandy Fri 28-Oct-16 14:59:41

Ugh what a dick. He wouldnt get my money.

There has been no Mr Tali for 7 years and I still manage to get shit done, you know because I'm adult with a brain. How do those kind of men think women survive on a daily basis.

I'd tell him to plumb off.

How would he get on with a lesbian couple? Tell him to jog on.

My dh is a Plumber, he'd never speak to a potential customer like that.

I'd look elsewhere if a man I was looking to employ refused to tell me how much we'd have to spend just because I was a woman.

Trifleorbust Fri 28-Oct-16 16:14:24

I would have said, "Okay, I assume as you won't discuss this any further with me that you don't want my business. Don't worry about it, we will get someone else."

The cheek of him.

LearningHowToFly Fri 28-Oct-16 16:21:12

Thanks all, we will not be using him again. Had to laugh at DH's response that it's just his generation and to ignore him. I very clearly told him what I thought about that!

ShesAStar Fri 28-Oct-16 16:37:09

We recently had an electrician who did exactly the same. Wanted to 'check' with DH about any decision. Once he finished the first part of the job I got someone else.

It is not just his generation, thats nonsense. Sex Discrimination Act came in early 70s when he would have been a teenager. Plus my dad ( ex joiner), would have been 88 if he was still alive and wouldnt have cut out a female like that. I would tell him to fuck off and get someone else

Discobabe Fri 28-Oct-16 16:49:12

I once had a plumber who refused to do some work until I'd cleared it with my dh. Unfortunately after my dh got home (he was away) we discovered plumber was full of shit and fixed it ourselves. We have a new much better plumber now!

Trifleorbust Fri 28-Oct-16 16:52:36

Unbelievable in this day and age. "Get the hell out of my house" might be an appropriate response to the next tradesperson who tries this!

squoosh Fri 28-Oct-16 16:53:31

My plumber is very nice. Doesn't eat biscuits as he's watching his weight.

My friend once had a plumber that looked like Evan Dando. He was like a beautiful mirage.

LurkingHusband Fri 28-Oct-16 16:53:39

Am I alone, in feeling society is sliding backwards somehow ?

I'm a child of the 70s, and behaviour like that is outdated 1950s shit.

Plus the lax attitudes to drink driving that seem to be re-emerging.

Plus casual racism.

sad

I get this all the time working in a garage when they need to speak to one of the lads, even if I clearly can help and tell them what they need to know or get them what they need, they blatently go and check with one of the lads. Some do it while your actually standing their in front of them, has she got me the right oil? They ask. Yes the lads say, just thought I'd better check, they say. I did say something to two customer, one laughed it off the other just looked at me as if I was mad.
An even better one was when a customer was sent in to get a car booked in and asked for the gaffer, a bloke, one of them directed him to the shop where cars are booked in, the customer looked at me and said to lads there's no one there I'll come back.
These examples can't even use the generation thing as an excuse and is so blatant that a lass obviously is completely incapable of doing certain things in some people's eyes. It's so annoying and they will never change and accept that you can actually help sometimes.

Silly twat. I would have sent him packing.
