To be upset about a bunch of trees?

The developers have chopped down the woodland in between our estate and the estate next to us, leaving a bunch of 10 foot high stumps.

They haven't even cleared away what they have cut down- it's all heaped up at either side of the strip. It looks awful, the houses which used to be bordered by a small woodland now overlook this tree cemetery and houses. The people who chopped it all down left these giant stumps saying they will grow back into trees?

AIBU ridiculous to be quite sad about all this, and am I mad or is it a load of nonsense that these giant tree stumps will grow back? I know more trees will eventually grow around them but surely we'll end up with saplings surrounded by giant tree stumps!

I'm assuming they chopped it down because the trees were starting to get large (20ish years old) and they didn't want to look after them. The developers had tried to sell the plots to the houses as garden extensions but no one was interested. What is left is just a mess!

I know it will grow back but I'm really quite sad!

That looks like a wildlife strip.
Was there a sign go up beforehand or consultation?

I'd call your local council Tree Officer ASAP. (You'll have one.)
They often have an OOH service for emergencies if the felling is still going on, and they're not adverse to going out and stopping works.

What sort of trees were they?

They've sort of pollarded them. It's a bit extreme but they will grow back. It's normal enough tree maintenance, you see a lot more of it in France for some reason.

I don't think it was a wildlife strip given that the developers were trying to sell bits off as plots. It was a mix of trees, mostly pine, birch (both of which have been completely cut down to the ground) and I'm not sure what the giant stumps are.

Unfortunately all the felling is done. A neighbour spoke to them on the last day and the workmen said they were leaving it as is as per instructions from the developers.

I know by summer it will look a lot different. I grew up in the country and living in suburbia I cling onto any and all bits of woodland/wildlife.

Why didn't you buy the land when offered it? I'd have jumped at the chance.

Fly It was £8,000 per half length for the strip as wide as your existing garden and though you can't tell from the photo, it's on a slope. There's around 20 houses each side so 40 strips in total being offered for sale. Would have been a nice earner for the developers. Too expensive for most people here who are happy with their garden size (and there was no warning about the felling)

Check the planning permission portal for your local council and see what the developer intends on doing with this piece of land.
