Bollocks?

Why do these silly meaningless quotes take off when quotes that ACTUALLY mean something are ignored/sidelined?

I agree

Twee shit. Wasn't there a thread a year or two back where people made up their own (with requisite background of a sunset etc) and tried to see if they'd catch on?Grin

But it does mean something. It's not literal. The meaning is obvious.

I don't mind if they make sense, if they're nonsensical I ignore. People are looking for a change from the usual clichés of 'look on the bright side' or 'it's always darkest before the dawn' (that one I ignore) so are trying to create new clichés.

Haha beauty

It means 'look in the bright side' which is meaningless!

I find these 'quotes' hilarious. People have them all over their houses!

Someone's bought me a cushion with the above on!

It's actually quite a nice cushion but that's not the point Grin

It falls into that category of platitudes though doesn't it?

Someone that can offer help / advice will give it. Those that can't / won't just offer up crap like this.

I'd rather see that than the passive agressive "I'm the girl that does everything for everyone but cries alone" type, usually posted on social media by the sort of person that publicises every tiny issue as a major drama.

Cos a lot of people are kinda stupid?

I agree - they are mostly bollocks and I should think, quite insulting at times.

I hate that stupid something about a storm, learn to dance in the rain! Or 'dance like no-one is watching' eh? What a load of guff.

Report
yesterdaysunshine · 25/10/2016 18:27

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Shite!

It would be kind of funny if everyone started actually, literally doing the storm passing/dancing in the rain one.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
That one always makes me say fuck off!

I prefer the old saying 'when life gives you lemons, add them to gin'

Mainly because I like gin.

Report
cardibach · 25/10/2016 18:37

If life gives you lemons, slice them into a gin would be more like it. (Although I prefer lime, so even that's bollocks).

I hate the 'always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn' type ones. Seriously, are you five? Totally agree about the passive aggressive posts - I know a girl who posts that shite everyday purely for attention.

Report
glueandstick · 25/10/2016 18:43

Is it gin time yet cardi?

God I hate meaningless quotes. The one I hate most was one used at slimming world all the time "aim for the moon and land in the stars"
Makes me feel irrational for some reason

YANBU.

My brother's mantra is "When God gives you lemons you FIND A NEW GOD".

Or from a card I bought a friend "When life gives you lemons I promise not to tell you a story about my cousin's friend who died of lemons".

Worst of all is when you have real troubles, in my case, a parent who had just died a long, lingering death and another parent who was using me as a whipping boy for her anger about his death, then someone gives you some trite little platitude. Not just once, either. Then they wonder why you get annoyed!

Wrinklytights · 25/10/2016 19:18

I hate these. They feed into the ridiculous notion that everyone has to look on the bright side all the time. If something shit has happened to someone you know, it's perfectly fine to acknowledge that it's shit. And if shit is happening to you, it's OK to feel sad about it ffs! (Oops - hit a nerve there)

It's not a bad thing to remember to focus on the positive instead of the negative To some people it makes a difference. . Of course you can choose to be miserable and cynical if that's your preference. Some people wallow in negativity.
