To think we're on the brink of WW3?

If the US and Russia become at war with each other, can we possibly stay out of it?

What if Donald Trump is president when it all kicks off?

Should I buy a gun? Or build a shelter? Or stock up on tins?

I am genuinely frightened.

US and Russia will never be in a proper war with each other. At worst, it'll be a Cold War style tension.

US and Russia both have nuclear weaponry, and Russia is allied with China. It's too much of a risk for the US to push that boundary. It's not in Russia or China's interest either.

I lived through the 80's - chill the fuck out!

SailingThroughTime Fri 21-Oct-16 22:34:15

YABU.
We've been through much worse.

TellMeStraight Fri 21-Oct-16 22:34:43

So why did Putin call all his diplomats' families back home?

He's telling anyone who will listen they're on the brink of war with the US.

If he continues to piss the US off, what's to stop them? Surely nuclear stalemate doesn't exclude conventional warfare?

Maybe I'm being thick.

ghostyslovesheep Fri 21-Oct-16 22:36:35

yeah

He's been saying that for the better part of a decade.

US and Russia are equally shit. Russia is being pissed off by the US just as much.

No one's going to willingly get into a proper war with either the US, China or Russia.

ThymeLord Fri 21-Oct-16 22:37:42

Nah, it won't happen. For all his craziness Putin is too sensible, and too happy enjoying all the luxuries the world has to offer, to start a war that will essentially annihilate a planet. Russia are sabre rattling is all.

TellMeStraight Fri 21-Oct-16 22:38:42

What the fuck was so dangerous about the 80s?! Apart from Michael Jackson and Jimmy Savile The Cold War wasn't really affecting people then, was it? I also lived through the 80s and had no idea they'd even been a Cold War until the wall came down.

SailingThroughTime Fri 21-Oct-16 22:38:50

It's all a bit of willy waving imo

pugsake Fri 21-Oct-16 22:39:51

DH is bloody obsessed with all this (military family)

I've told him to double his medication.

ghostyslovesheep Fri 21-Oct-16 22:40:36

haha seriously - google 'the cold war' '1980's' ffs

I was at Greenham

Nuclear war was a real threat - I grew up terrified

go buy a big grip!

TheHiphopopotamus Fri 21-Oct-16 22:42:19

I lived through the 80's - chill the fuck out!

grin

Same. No point worrying. There's bugger all you can do about it.

Oh, and don't watch 'Threads' wink

TheHiphopopotamus Fri 21-Oct-16 22:43:37

What the fuck was so dangerous about the 80s

Is that a serious question?

SilentBiscuits Fri 21-Oct-16 22:44:26

I think the consequences of climate change are far more terrifying and a likelier prospect than ww3.

TellMeStraight Fri 21-Oct-16 22:44:56

and Russia are equally shit. Russia is being pissed off by the US just as much. yes, of course.

DH is very upset with me for bringing it up. He told me I couldn't possibly fight off a bunch of Russian soilders with my single gun. I told him the gun was to kill the DCs and me to avoid what happens to women and children in warfare. He's not prepared to discuss it.

Pluto30 Fri 21-Oct-16 22:45:31

Alright, well I think we can all agree you're either a troll or you've got a screw loose.

TellMeStraight Fri 21-Oct-16 22:46:27

Yes it was serious. I thought it was all on the wind down by then. Yes I was there!!

ElBandito Fri 21-Oct-16 22:46:34

Ahhhh bless. Stock up on tins, if it makes you feel better. Also under 'other stuff' on here you will find the 'Preppers' section. Fill your boots. I know you might be worried but as they say above it has been worse than this!

TellMeStraight Fri 21-Oct-16 22:47:19

Best you pass me a spanner then. Toes don't need waxing, thanks.

Perhaps I should stop reading the Express.

SleepFreeZone Fri 21-Oct-16 22:47:27

I think the world will be fucked over by natural disasters/climate change not by nuclear weapons.

alfagirl73 Fri 21-Oct-16 22:47:56

Actually OP you're not being entirely unreasonable. Yes, indeed, we had a similar situation in the 80's and so many of us have lived through this kind of stuff before. THAT SAID, there are different things going on these days which makes it a bit more complicated.

Keeping it as simple as possible... and I'm not up for a big debate on it:

No, I don't think we'll go into WWIII but Russia ARE trying to provoke the US into conflict; it won't go all the way to nuclear war (Putin is too clever for that - he's a nut job but he's not stupid).... but it does have the potential to get rather unpleasant and I suspect we will enter into another Cold War type situation with various conflicts going on. Putin is playing games right now; it's kind of like poking the US with a big stick and winding it up while they're dealing with this election. It's provocation - for the moment at least.

As for Trump; I strongly doubt he will win this thing; he's a complete psychopath though - it's baffling to me how anyone is voting for him. He should be getting sectioned, not running the USA! But don't worry - the odds on him being President for the next couple of terms - or even the next term are actually very low.

So - no - I don't think you need to be building any bunkers but you're not ENTIRELY unreasonable in that there ARE tensions building, stuff IS going on that is causing great concern, but I don't see it ending in WWIII. Using nukes wouldn't be in anyone's interest - including Putin's and Trump/Clinton's.

BombadierFritz Fri 21-Oct-16 22:48:13

in all seriousness, perhaps you could do with visiting the gp?

BombadierFritz Fri 21-Oct-16 22:50:41

sorry that cut off too soon
it was just the talk of buying a gun to kill yourself and kids. perhaps you didnt mean it/overdramatising but if those are genuine thoughts, please speak to gp as our uk world is nowhere near those kind of thoughts

Redballblueball Fri 21-Oct-16 22:51:22

Honestly I think we're probably all going to wiped out by some weird pandemic.

It's been a while since we've had one of them.

Actually when you go to the Eden centre they have this big evolutionary timeline. We're well well well overdue an extinction level event.
