AIBU?

I know I'm being petty but AIBU

I've posted a couple of woes about my house share.
Typical London set up where as we don't earn 100k we can't afford to live alone.
Before I had an issue with a girl eating ALL my food, she'd ask for a slice of bread and eat the loaf.
After I called her out on this and leaving the kitchen and bathroom like a fucking bombsite recently, she, who is 27 years old, got her mum to come round and tell me off for being mean to her Confused
Anyway I know she was home all day yesterday as has recently been fired (for being an entitled special snowflake and not understanding why she had to come in on time and couldn't just decide on the morning to not go into work like everyone else), and loads of my food has gone again,
A full bottle of squash is now a third full, i had a packet of crumpets which are gone and a full bag of pasta is about a quarter full now Angry

Seeing as she got her bloody mum to come round and tell me off after I asked her to not eat all my food last time, AIBU to just keep everything in my room so she actually has to buy her own!!?

Of course YWNBU.

Is there a way of dividing up the cupboards and locking them that would prevent her from being able to steal your food in future?

It would be SO tempting to piss in the squash or something. But don't. Put a lock on one/two cupboards and store your food there, plus a locked box in the fridge. She sounds awful!

UANBU. That would piss me right off. You are roommates not family. I would keep everything in my room including soap, toothpaste, toilet rolls etc and wouldn't care if she thought I was being petty. Angry Could you get one of those little fridges for your room?

Or ring her mam and ask her to tell her off WinkGrin

Tell her to stop stealing your food and get a locked cupboard and a locked box for the fridge.

To up the cost and ask her to replace it. Tbh though she sounds like a nightmare who won't listen to you and will get mummy to cry to. Lock up your food minus some laxative chocolate.

You've posted about her before haven't you?

How many of you are house sharing OP?Is there anyway you could get her to leave and get someone else(that isn't an entitled twat and a thief with serious Mummy issues)to share with you?

The same as PP said I'd lock anything that's yours away and keep the key on you,I know it's stupid and you shouldn't have to she is a grown women after all but if it stops her nicking your stuff then it would be worth it.

I'd also stick a notice up somewhere that she can't miss it, stating that taking something you know is not yours without the owners permission is THEFT! and you'd hate for anyone that's been a victim of these thefts feel that they had to involve the POLICE!

And then stand by and watch her face Grin

Well no yanbu. House meeting time, but don't think you can accuse her if there are other flatmates too. Just ask everyone not to eat your food.

God and no notes, have a conversation.

I would leave out of date food for her or something as equally sinister!

Just tell her! You've been at my food again...I told you no before and I'm telling you no now! Keep your thieving hands off my stuff!

Not unreasonable at all. When I lived in halls I had to keep all my food in a small fridge in my room. (tiny one from Argos. It was pink :o )

Alternatively if you could put a lock on a cupboard, though that might not work, depending on the design of the door

Locked cupboards or food hidden away. Little harder with refrigerable items though.

Having said that I used to find the best way to stop people stealing my milk was to put a lippy mark on the rim so it looked like I'd been drinking directly out of it.

I would clear out a cupboard for your food and then install a padlock. It's a pain for you but will save you headaches in the long run.

All perishables in the fridge should be clearly labelled as yours. If she still takes them, as for monetary compensation. She should stop if it starts costing her money

Just tell her to stop eating your food and if she does she has to replace it. If her mum comes round and has ago at you about her precious cupcake tell her mum that you're not her mum and will not be funding her jobless entitled ass

Ah, house shares. There is always the skinflint one, isn't there?

When I was sharing a flat my flatmate refused to buy anything - even loo roll. She said she didn't use it Confused . Every weekend I bought Sunday Times and she'd be hovering round waiting to read it. One week I had a dreadful cold and as she was going out I asked her to bring back the paper. "Oh, no, I don't read it," she said. After that I read the paper and then would stuff it in the bin and squash food all over it. Still I saw her scrabbling in the kitchen bin wiping old Chinese takeaway off the travel section.

If I had my time again I'd be less passive aggressive and just say, "Please don't eat my food/use my stuff."

You're not being petty. Why on earth should you have to pay for her food, or put up with her mess?!

And YANBU, obviously. She sounds dreadful.

I couldn't survive flatshares.

Move.

If you know for certain tasks her I'd tell her straight. I'm keeping h food in h room because you are a thief.
No passive aggressive notes, no little tricks just straight up with her. If she wants to run to mummy then let her. If mummy wants to say something then tell her straight too. You expect that kind of behaviour from kids starting out at uni, not fully grown adults.

Well if she wants to communicate through her mum maybe you should ring her mum and tell her that her precious daughter is stealing from you again.

Or you could put a lock on your cupboards and tell her how much she owes you. That's probably better!

Olympiathequeen · 21/10/2016 08:53

Put a lock on the cupboard. Might have to get a small 'beer' fridge because, in my experience, it doesn't stop with cupboard food

Report
dowhatnow · 21/10/2016 08:56

That's an insult to kids starting out at Uni Angry Most of those wouldn't behave like that!

Mini fridge and a plastic box for 'cupboard' items for your room? She'll probably take the piss and accuse you of being unreasonable, at which point you can make a charmingly sweet comeback about a 27 year old asking her mum to come round and tell off another adult.

Pointless trying to change her behaviour - her mum is enabling her and will continue to do so.

Write "I licked this" on the ham/cheese. Keep stuff like squash in your room. Or get a mini fridge for your room.
