AIBU?

Am I being a spoilsport?

Dh is desperate for us to go away for a long weekend with the kids to Norway for the Christmas markets.
Sounds good yeah?
Not to me. The children are young (one is a toddler, one has behavioural issues). I'm stressing already at the thought of it. The getting them through the airport, the flight, bustling them through busy markets, everyone sleeping in one hotel room....

It sounds like hell wrapped up in a nice bow to me.

If I say no he'll go on about how I need to be more spontaneous. He's probably right but I like being boring and safe.

Aibu?

YANBU my ex would be the same; accuse me of negativity when I pointed out why something might not be as good as it worked in his head.

YANBU. That would be hell, the kids would hate it and play up. You'd essentially be walking round in the freezing cold with the kids strapped to their buggies and paying a flipping fortune for it! Dropping the kids off with granny and having a boozy weekend in Norway is what you're after!

Its bloody cold in Norway at Christmas!

Yanbu it does sound hellish it would be just the same shit except in Norway trampling about markets with 2 bored children nah tell him to wait till they are older or left home then you can go as a couple.

I think it sounds lovely! Book the tickets now... one adult, two children Wink

Enjoy a lovely long weekend in front of the fire with several a glass of mulled wine.

I'm glad it's not just me! It sounds like a right faff on just to look round markets. I've suggested London but he wants the children to have the experience of being abroad.

How cold will it be? Any other negatives I can throw at him?

DH is German and we go to the Christmas markets there most years.
However, we didn't take the DC until the youngest was fully mobile ( 4 I think) as it would have been hell otherwise.
It will be cold ( but hot inside), too crowded and there will be naff all for a 1 year old to do other than complain.
Wouldn't even consider it with very young children

Oh could be -10 it would be freezing. tbh they wont remember being abroad seriously you need to wait till the youngest is at least 4 for experiences you want them to remeber imo.

I've been to Norway a number of times, always in the winter (but never at Christmas). It's bloody cold and very very very expensive! A Christmas market in a place like Norway, whilst magical if covered in snow will be pretty boring for kids that age. Would any family be willing to have the kids for you to go for a weekend?

Why would any sane person want to take 2 small children around some markets in the cold? ConfusedSad

Norway is expensive and alcohol is even more expensive. A boozy weekend is unlikely even without the children.

We have had a Christmas Market cluttering up visiting our pedestrianised shopping street most years recently. Could you find something like that local to you and give it a try first. Norway at Christmas is dark, cold, possibly wet, a long way and, as other posters have said, expensive.

Depends on where you are could be as cold as -10 in Oslo, where my husband is it's about -20 can get colder too!

Could you do something like Edinburgh markets - it could be abroad if they get their referendum....you'll just be visiting abroad early!!
Try something shorter closer to home and see how they react. I was really nervous about taking my two away, however, we had a 1 hour train delay, sat outside Doncaster station resulting in us missing our connecting train. My kids were superstars and it put my mind at ease for the rest of the weekend, the ONLY time a train delay has been a good thing!
If yours cope with a smaller weekend then perhaps open up abroad by taking a ferry somewhere as there is less security (not less, but more relaxed/less stressful) and see how they cope and then build them up to a plane....plus then you get 3 trips not just 1 ;)

Hadn't thought of Edinburgh, we keep saying we want to go there too so will suggest that. I do feel like a spoilsport though. He comes up with these fancy ideas and I always think of every way it could go wrong. I'm going to have go with one of them one day.

He says £150 return flights for all 4 of us, does that sound right? How much are hotels, transport, food etc?

Your husband is mental. I have one boy and wouldn't have taken him anywhere like that (shopping holiday) til he was at least 7 or 8. He would have been bored shitless.

How much of the planning and organising does he do for these great ideas of his? I don't mean booking the flights, that is the easy bit, done on the internet from the comfort of your own home. Does he organise the children's clothes, snacks, activities? Does he plan timings, possible places to eat, things for the children to do? Find vouchers / money off offers?
Its easy to be spontaneous when you can hand over all of the logistical shitwork to someone else.

That is not to bad flights the Tram goes into the airport right into city centre . Check out MOTEL ONE for staying its reasonable £60 a room (i think) but a decent place to stay.

Norway is insanely expensive. Why there rather than Germany? We did take DS to a German market when he was 2 and still in a buggy. It was quite good fun, there were fair rides for him and music and he enjoyed the lights and food. But we were just there for an afternoon and it wasn't a long journey. Several days in Norway is completely different.

Can he not go by himself? Or is he too scared?
