AIBU?

Ex and Halloween costume

RottenTomatoes959 · 17/10/2016 11:36

I was looking to get LO(20 months) a chucky costume for Halloween this year. It is my turn to have him for Halloween as ex had him last year. Last year we both went shopping for his costume together and got him a lion costume. Ex is insistent that I was the only one to decide on the costume and he had no say. Tbh I don't remember the day very well so that could be the case but ex has form for exaggerating and "remembering" situations differently to suit his cause.

My aibu is once I mentioned my costume plans to ex he immediately put his foot down and insisted I can't dress him as chucky as children should only be cute on Halloween and not creepy or scary. I pointed out if it was his Halloween he could dress him in whatever he liked and I also said his reasoning was ridiculous as its a good costume idea and there's no specific "rules" as to how toddlers should be dressed on Halloween. I wouldn't mind so much if he'd be around all day but he won't even see him in his costume chucky or otherwise.
Who's being unreasonable?

Both of you. Hallowe'en for a baby is a bit ridiculous.

You should both count yourselves lucky that your biggest dispute is about something so trivial imo.
Buy him an outfit each if you so wish.
Halloween is a time for creepy outfits if that's any help.

far too young to be dressing up for Halloween - you both need to get a grip

mybeardeddragon not our biggest dispute unfortunately just the only one that boggled my mind so much as the reasoning that I had to ask.

Furthering your post-marital grievances via your toddler's fancy dress costume is pretty sad on both sides.

We were never married. We both quite young when we had him so still young enough to get caught up in excitement for Halloween. I can see that I probably am being quite immature about the whole thing though.

To be honest we as a family don't do 'scary' halloween. I majorly dislike 'dead bride', 'dead schoolgirl' etc.costumes and wouldn't be a fan of chucky for a toddler.
But that's our family decision and something we decided pre kids.
If your ex has had no previous views either way he's being a knob and you should limit info to him. Your halloween with DS your decision. However, if it's something he has always had an opionion on this moght be something you should give consideration to.

Neither of you can dictate how the other dresses a child during the others time.

Sadly, in this case, as the Chucky idea is tasteless and just vile.

Chucky is a fucking ridiculous for a child that has no idea who the character is.

Chucky? As in the killer doll? Erm...... Is that really appropriate? Wouldn't a little pumpkin outfit be cuter?

Chucky gives me nightmares

Absolutely horrendous! Chucky WTF!

Buy him a Peppa's Halloween board book or make pumpkin muffins or something - not dress him as a murderer from a horror film. My mind is still boggling you would want to do this. Christ!

We had lovely pumpkin outfits for ours as babies for Halloween, I wouldn't be happy with Chucky it's too extreme...

YABU that is a horrible outfit for a toddler.

Hmmm, I can see I am being unreasonable about the whole situation then. I'll have to rethink the whole costume idea. Thank you ladies.

Chucky for a 20 month old??? Your ex is right and yabu. There is no argument here, no reason to even being last year into it, he is simply saying, and he is right, that chucky is a terrible and inappropriate costume for a child. It's not about being young and immature it's about having some cop on

Chucky always reminds me of poor little James Bulger. I am fairly sure I remember that film was connected to his murder in some way.

My family and friends have always done "scary" Halloween and when he was growing up so did his as his dad did stage make up so was very talented at the blood and gore stuff which is why I was questioning him. As I said I though I can see its too much and will choose differently.

Sorry but I personally feel YABU - dressing a toddler as Chucky is an absolutely horrible horrible idea, and totally inappropriate. Wow.

Fair play op, in a few years he will want to do scary and then you can certainly go as wild with him as you both like but it is too much at his age now I think. Fair play though for taking it well and saying you are others points

I have to say, some of the staff in my local Asda last year were terrifying! Brilliant and cleverly done make up, but a bit much considering little ones go in there!

So far today I have seen a thread about porn where a man has made a valid point and been agreed with and now this, where a AIBU poster has said "yes, you're all right, I was BU".

What is MN coming to?

OP they are all right, the chucky costume is a bad idea for a 20 month old baby.

I'm going to take a different view. I'm Irish and Halloween is huge over here. A baby dressed as Chucky is fun! I think your main issue is with your ex. I guess whoever has the kid dresses them? And probably better to have two costumes than a fight?

I know I'm in the minority but I actually think a chucky costume would look fab Blush but then I think the more scary, the better for Halloween 👻🎃
