To think it's unfair to leave a child in wrong way round shoes all day?

My ds has just started school, he's 4. They have p e twice a week and it is very evident which days as all children come out completely back to front and inside out. They have p e straight after drop off and say they want to teach children indepence so don't correct incorrect dressing. Fair enough! But on two days my child has come out with shoes on wrong feet. On Friday he said he'd had a really bad day because his friends wouldn't play with him because he was being to slow at running and he'd fallen over 3 times, he didn't click he could walk properly because his shoes were on incorrectly. I'm really trying to work on teaching him which foot goes on which (any tips?!) but he's not getting it very quickly! Aibu to think at reception age teachers should make sure children in their care have shoes on correct feet / prompt them when the haven't? It was very obvious he was walking like a penguin!

Can you cut a sticker in half and put half in each shoe so that they only match up when they are the right way round or even draw half a circle in each?

Get a big sticker. Of eg a dinosaur. Cut it in half. Stick half in one shoe, half in the other, so that when shoes are put together the stick is right.

Sticker tips are good, but unkind to knowingly let children have shoes on the wrong feet.

Write his first name in his left shoe and his surname in his right shoe so he has to make his name before he puts his shoes on.
You would hope the teacher would help if she noticed but she may not have seen them with 29 other children in the class.

Sticker idea is a good one. I would also have a word with the teacher saying that he is still having a bit of trouble and could she check he has them on the right feet otherwise you will be sending him in with his trainers on and no other shoes.

dd2s reception teacher said the same thing about independence. I dont know why she couldnt jist say "good try dd2, but they are on the wrong feet how about we try again" which is what I would say to the preschoolers at work.

The woman in the shoe shop solved it when she told her that the straps always fasten next to the little toe. I think the sticker idea is a good one.

For goodness sake they are only 4. That is sheer laziness not to help them. What harm does it do to say your shoes need swapping over. That seems cruel to me to leave a child in uncomfortable shoes.

I very much doubt the teacher noticed. They aren't going to go around checking 30 pairs of shoes in between everything else that is involved in getting the class changed after pe.

Ds now has 1-1 and part of her role is helping with getting changed. Before that he often came home with shoes on the wrong feet, or t shirt inside out (under jumper) if the staff noticed they corrected things but they can't check them all

bear in mind kids in reception take their shoes off all the time - it might not have been from PE.

Exactly euphemia and brag includes the numerous items that end up with the wrong child so the teacher needs to sort them and try to make sure all children have the right stuff. when half isn't labelled

And making sure that the next activity is set up ready for the class too.

euphemia, not noticing that a childs shoes were on the wrong feet I could understand. But dd2s teacher told me that they wouldnt tell a child that there shoes were on the wrong feet because they wanted them to be indepndant.

Yes! teacher, Reception ones in particular, and the people who help them, are exceptionally lazy or notice but don't care.

Well we must have been very lucky then because I've never heard of a teacher doing this.

I helped a yr1 child with his socks this week. After pe he could only find one. He'd put that one on and the shoe for that foot but other sock nowhere to be found. We checked inside his shoe, we checked under his sock in case he'd put both on one foot.

Admitting default we went to the reception class to get some spares. Spare socks are character ones so parents realise they're not theirs and return them. So, he had to remove the good shoe and sock so he could wear matching socks. And there was the original sock stuffed inside the shoe he'd been wearing. Little ones often don't find shoes on the wrong feet that uncomfortable, in the classroom there was probably no reason anyone would notice.

Have you ever got 30 4 year olds changed all at the same time? Have you ever done this while making sure little Johnny doesn't lose his t shirt for the 4th time this month? Oh and keeping an eye on little Sasha who had bruises last week. Then there's Brian who has autism and needs a bit of extra support and David who is crying because he hates PE. Along with about 10 other things all happening at the same time. Yabu.
