To think this friendship is too much?

I moved departments recently and I made friends with a guy there and we started having lunch and breaks together every day

(He's gay, just to point out that this isn't romantic in any sense).

But now he's started calling me every single day after work and wants to chat for like 2 hours.

There was also an incident where we bumped into another woman in our department in the break room. He said hello to her and she said it back.

Then he said to me - I can't believe she didn't say hi to you, she doesn't like you.

And then I mentioned something she said to me not long after and he responded with oh my god she really hates you.

Then I realised I was disliking this woman for no reason and I could actually see for myself she was making an effort with me.

He does have good qualities ... But aibu to find this so overwhelming?

No, yanbu at all. The calling for two hours a day and telling you that others don't like you (and only he is your real friend) are major red flags. I'd cool it with him. Don't feel bad about it. He'll have experienced this before.

The whole 'She doesn't like you' business would worry me. It seems like he's positioning himself as the only one you can trust (or similar).

A so-called friend did this to me years ago. She was forever passing on comments people had supposedly made about me, priding herself on being 'honest' with me. She cocked up in the end and told me 'Claire disagrees with what you did about X'. What she didn't know was that I hadn't told Claire about X.
