To be so bloody upset that nobody remembered my birthday?

It's not a landmark birthday or anything, but I'm sitting here in tears about the lack of..well..anything. Not even a text from my kids.

I lost my job a few weeks ago and have been very down about it. I have always had something to get up for on a morning, but am at this moment sitting in bed in my hideous fluffy purple dressing gown, wondering if I really am so insignificant.

Should I just accept that now I'm older, my birthdays shouldn't be celebrated?

Yanbu-happy birthday flowers

You're not insignificant.

Agerbilatemycardigan Wed 05-Oct-16 11:17:19

Thank you Champagne

It's just that I always made a huge effort for everyone else's birthdays. It really hurts sad

EtTuTuttiFrutti Wed 05-Oct-16 11:18:45

You're not insignificant sad. How terribly terribly hurtful for you.

Get yourself dressed, have a cup of tea, and go to the park or any nice green space. The walk and fresh air will make you feel better and not so alone.

Happy Birthday and many many more flowers wine cake

Happy Birthday! flowerscake
I would say- run yourself a hot bath/shower and take yourself out, even if it's just to the shop to load up on treats, a bunch of flowers and a nice lunch to throw together and relax on the sofa watching some trashy tv in peace. It sounds like you've been through a lot lately and deserve to treat yourself. As for your children- if they text or call today in general, remind them it's your birthday

Shezza71 Wed 05-Oct-16 11:19:09

That's not nice at any age
Happy Birthday xx

This happened last year. Hurt a lot because I religiously remember birthdays & will send a text/organise parties, but I didn't even get a belated birthday message. Seemed I'd been totally forgotten.

Well as far as I'm concerned YANBU.

I think lots of people think as you get older birthdays become less important, and I guess it's true that it's not the same as when you're a kid and the world revolves around you for a day... But I would be really upset too!

Happy Birthday agerbilate! cake flowers wine

I'm sorry that you lost your job and that people are being a bit thoughtless about looking after you, but you're not insignificant - of course you're not! How old are your kids by the way? Is it just teenage / young adult self involved-ness possibly?

LetsJunglyJumpToIt Wed 05-Oct-16 11:21:00

Happy birthday! No don't accept it, it's so thoughtless not to remember. I hope you're going to say something to your kids. How old are they?

EnterFunnyNameHere Wed 05-Oct-16 11:21:24

I'm sorry everyone forgot. I would be hurt too. flowers

I agree with pp take yourself off out and do something lovely, or stay in having a duvet day and watching a bunch of film or a box set.

Happy Birthday!! cake

Go out and do something nice! Beauty treatment? Tasty lunch? A nice walk in the woods?

acasualobserver Wed 05-Oct-16 11:22:31

That would make me sad too. Also, commiserations on losing your job. I hope though, in your situation, I'd try to salvage something from the day and not just moulder on the sofa. So get out of the purple dressing gown and then out of the house. If no-one else will, do something nice for yourself.

(And, FWIW, happy birthday from me.)

gingercat02 Wed 05-Oct-16 11:24:04

Bastards the lot of them. Happy Happy Birthday flowers chocolate cake
Birthdays are always important and your kids of all people should remember it. No excuse for not sending a proper card, (no text e-card nonsense acceptable from close family!!!)

bluesky9 Wed 05-Oct-16 11:25:45

I have been exactly where you are. It get's much better I promise. Happy birthday 🎂

Agerbilatemycardigan Wed 05-Oct-16 11:26:21

Thank you all for your kind messages. I think that I should take your advice tissue and EtTu and get out and about for some fresh air.

I think I need a distraction right now. Apart from MN that

Ooooo its my birthday today. Attached to this post is a photo of the present I received from my GF. (No I haven't forgotten the photo, it is accurate)

Happy birthday to you from me flowers

LiveLifeWithPassion Wed 05-Oct-16 11:26:50

I would be sad too.

Don't dwell on it too much. Make some plans to do something nice today.
Can you meet any friends for lunch or a drink?
Go out and do something by yourself.

LiveLifeWithPassion Wed 05-Oct-16 11:27:26

Oh and happy birthday! cake

Happy birthday Saggy

Here's a little something from me cake and flowers

justilou Wed 05-Oct-16 11:32:23

I would buy myself a beautiful cake and sit down in front of my family and eat every single bit without saying a word!

5moreminutes Wed 05-Oct-16 11:34:45

Happy birthday!

Give your kids a chance though - aren't they likely to get in touch a bit later in the day? If they're working they'll probably ring in the evening - that plus flowers ordered to be delivered on the day (which can be in the afternoon) is my idea of the normal way to contact someone on their birthday, no text by 11am doesn't mean you're forgotten!

Have a nice day anyway - could you look into a little bit of volunteering to give yourself a sense of purpose til you find another job? Not today but later in the week.

Agerbilatemycardigan Wed 05-Oct-16 11:41:05

My family don't live nearby but I could always text them a picture of me sitting with an unfeasibly large piece of cake cake

........and a Guinness halo

HuskyLover1 Wed 05-Oct-16 11:44:57

Is your birthday today? If so, it's still early. I wouldn't call or text my Mum until the afternoon, as I know she's retired and she goes to bed late and sleeps in. Could it be that they know you're not working and think you might sleep late? Have they ever forgotten before?

The first year my son was away from home, I thought he'd forgotten Mothers Day. I went out to walk the dogs and when I got back, there he was!

The day is young...

If you do get to 9pm tonight and haven't heard from them, I'd go ape-shit. Uncool maybe, but I would be very angry, and I just couldn't let that go.

Happy Birthday!
