Is it just me or has anyone else noticed an increasing number of posts recently with lots of ....... between sentences?

It really annoys me...... aibu?

peppercold Tue 04-Oct-16 21:01:30

........ yes grin

peppercold Tue 04-Oct-16 21:01:47

You knew that was coming didn't you?

SaucyJack Tue 04-Oct-16 21:02:42

I love a ......?

I mine it with my eyebrows and a sideways glance when I read it.

SaucyJack Tue 04-Oct-16 21:03:30

*mime

Well... Tbh.... I've noticed it as well and...I was wondering if it's maybe... people eople writing... exactly as things sound in their head?

AmeliaJack Tue 04-Oct-16 21:05:12

I like a good ellipsis personally. It should just be 3 dots though. Anything else is just showing off.

grin

SirChenjin Tue 04-Oct-16 21:05:33

Posts I can cope with, but partial thread titles with a ..... irritate the hell out of me and I refuse to open them

GaryGilmoresEyes Tue 04-Oct-16 21:06:23

Ellipsis...hmmmmmm...grin

ageingrunner Tue 04-Oct-16 21:07:58

Maudlinmaud Tue 04-Oct-16 21:08:39

StCecilia Tue 04-Oct-16 21:20:51

I do this...all the time...sorry. I just can't stop though...it builds...tension wink

acasualobserver Tue 04-Oct-16 21:22:50

Like any other sort of punctuation, used correctly, it can add meaning.

SabineUndine Tue 04-Oct-16 21:26:47

Strictly speaking, it should be three full stops with a space between each and before the first and after the last . . . like that. It's called an ellipsis and shows that text or speech are missing.

Anniegetyourgun Tue 04-Oct-16 21:28:12

I likes a good ellipsis, I does. But it has to be in the right context or...

The posts I've seen on here have definitely not been in the correct context.

That's what annoys me.

U2HasTheEdge Tue 04-Oct-16 21:44:23

I do it, cause I like them...

M0nstersinthecl0set Tue 04-Oct-16 21:55:28

How else would you waste someone elses time? Clickbait writing I suppose.

DurhamDurham Tue 04-Oct-16 21:55:48

..................I................don't know............what you..........mean!

SaucyJack Tue 04-Oct-16 21:59:33

"it builds...tension"

Yup. Now reading all the posts on this thread in the style of Mystic..... Meh-EH-ehh-eh-eh-EH-gggggg......

I bet she loves a passive-aggressive ellipsis.

I do it an awful lot....it's because to me, they serve a different function than a full stop, comma or whatever.

It's a pause...dramatic or thoughtful....it illustrates where I'm not finished speaking but it's not the end of the sentence.

I think people do it when they're typing as they speak.

I could add full stops in the places they belong and commas in the places they belong...but I don't want to.

I prefer writing like this...because it reads differently and when I'm on a forum rather than writing an essay, the rules don't apply.

SatsukiKusakabe Wed 05-Oct-16 02:38:21

I did this today, I think for the first time. And yes, it's the William Shatner voice thing. (And to convey a sense of uncertainty).

However if there's a thread about it, maybe I've unthinkingly followed a trend, like when I see a Budweiser ad and five minutes later go to the fridge to look for beer without knowing why...

RubbishMantra Wed 05-Oct-16 02:39:29

I do it. I try to type as I would speak - sometimes needing a pause to think about what I'm thinking. As you would in everyday conversations.....
