AIBU?

to think Grandparents should know better

I have nc because I am cross and may out myself.

My parents, bless them, took my 11 year old DD shopping in London today for a treat. She had some left over birthday money (£60) that she took with her.

They had lunch and visited many 'designer' clothing stores that are way out of our price range so not generally visited by me/us.

In one of these very expensive designer stores my parents decided it was a fabulous idea to allow DD to purchase a ladies jumper priced at £120 spending every last penny of her birthday money plus they gave her the shortfall.

She never wears jumpers, ever. It doesn't fit because she is a tiny age 11 and the garment is a ladies size 8, and it was £120 FFS! Angry

My parents also removed the tags so she could wear it home and they threw away the receipt with their tissues etc while at the train station.

I cant return it (its the other end of the country for a start) and DD is now saying because it doesn't fit that actually she doesn't like it and can I send it back. I cant return it without tags or a receipt.

AIBU to think grown adults really should know better than to allow an 11 year old to spend £120 on a jumper, that she doesn't wear anyway and that's not even in her size. My mother is currently lecturing me the merits of life lessons being learned and that DD will 'get over it'.

Oh she probably nagged them into it
I would be cross at her not them , lesson learned

I agree it's a life lesson

Sell it on ebay

Meh.

They gave her a treat of a trip to London, took her in the shops she wanted to go in and let her buy what she want. That's what grandparents do.

Your mum's right that it's a lesson learned for your DD.

Bit bonkers of them to cut the tags off and throw away the receipt when it didn't fit her, though.

She could list it on eBay and then buy something she likes more, on there, with whatever she makes.

Your daughter spent her birthday money. Your parents made up the extra money. In what way have YOU been inconvenienced?

Only1scoop · 01/10/2016 21:26

She must have massively wanted it....the tags thing is a bit mad but hey, dd has probably gone off jumper as you're so annoyed about it.

I agree with you op-they shouldn't have let her spend her money on it. If they'd not offered the shortfall she wouldn't have been able to buy it.

It is a lesson for her though-she'll know not to make such rash decisions when shopping.

Totally irresponsible of the GPs. Why cut the tags?! Keep tags and receipt as standard surely!!

£120 on one item is ridiculous and I'd like to think my parents/in laws would be actively discouraging her from being so impulsive.

dd has probably gone off jumper as you're so annoyed about it

I think this is probably the most likely thing

I'd be annoyed as it's a complete waste.

Pretty daft. Is it a nice jumper though? If so, I'd just put it away (protected from moths) and see if she wants it in a few years time when she is a ladies size 8.

Yes, ridiculous to spend £120 on a jumper. Maybe less ridiculous to spend it on a life lesson.

Floralnomad · 01/10/2016 21:41

I don't think your parents have done anything wrong really , you allowed her to take the £60 , so presumably were happy for her to spend it and they aren't asking you for the other £60 so I can't see what your issue is . If your daughter genuinely now doesn't like it ( not just because of your reaction) she will have learnt a lesson for the future .

Why didn't she try it on?

What store is it from? £120 for a jumper isn't designer prices.

I agree OP they were unreasonable.

They spent the 60 quid on alcohol to keep them all entertained on the train journey up, then realised they screwed up and decided they better shop lift something to pretend they spent it on something productive. Removed the tags as you obviously couldn't return it.

They were just too drunk to steal something useful.

What brand is it. Post a link to it.

You going batshit crazy at the waste of money is what has made your DD go off the jumper as she can tell you are unhappy

If you had said what a lovely jumper, she wouldnt be asking to take it back.

It isnt your money spent, what is your problem.

Your parents were really daft op I'm with you.

Id much rather the 'life lesson' was teaching her the value of money and how to spend it wisely. Also- she had £60 not £120, so she couldn't afford the jumper- there's the lesson. The fact they just gave her the money for it is insane.

This is totally what I would expect from grandparents! Your dd probably really wanted it - turned on the pleading eyes and grandparents are easy targets! She was probably desperate to wear it so they took off the tags.

Grandparents lose all sense when it comes to their grandkids ime!!

I think you're being OTT. Your parents are right, it is a life lesson and a good one at that.

Your DD will think more about the value of things in future.

Who planned this trip to London for the day to go into clothes shops looking at ladies garments with your 11 year old daughter. YABU for not asking questions to begin with about where they were going. If I was your daughter I would be very disappointed a big trip like that and all you get is a ladies jumper. What a waste of a trip and money don't they have any common sense.

claraclutterbuck its a Versace jumper. From an outlet store hence the price although it seems a huge amount to me because most of my clothes come from the high street. Do you think it cost more than that as I cant find any anywhere near that price Confused

I didn't go mad at DD I just nodded and said 'that's nice' then chased my parents up the drive to ask what on earth they were thinking.

Apparently DD said she liked it but couldn't afford it, they said 'if she liked it that much she should have it' so they gave her the extra. They didn't think to try it on her first because it didn't look very big on the hanger. She mentioned a few times on the way home it didn't fit, it was too baggy and draughty and it didn't look as nice as on the model in the store. By the time she had got home she had decided she didn't like it that much after all.

Its going on ebay to try and recoup some of her lost money. She says the grandparents were insistent that she spend all her money because theres no point holding onto it after bringing it out with her. She says she wanted books but they thought she should buy some nice clothes instead because books are boring (yes my parents really would say that) . Hmm

Clearly you all think its a worthy life lesson. Perhaps a better life lesson is never go shopping with grandparents? Blush

You still have to guide an 11 year old and teach them along the way. There is so many kids out there hanging around doing nothing and getting into trouble with boys or girls. £120 is a lot of money to spend on rubbish and then call it a life lesson after WOW I heard it all now.

YANBU, grandparents should know better.

Grandparents totally misjudged the situation and have behaved very foolishly by taking DD into designer shops which she couldnt afford. Sounds like grandparents were showing off in some way, encouraging DD to try on clothes which she couldnt afford and didnt really want.
