My SIL home schools her daughter.

But all the time, she is posting "I just thort of a new idea..." or "We just need to get threw this..." or ^"I love home schoolling" etc.

Just makes me twitch.

I was at my ds's nursery (nursery!) curriculum meeting last night and was quite honestly laughing at the thought of meetings about a 3yr olds curriculum! But I've come away with such a respect for these teachers that are putting thought, care, structure and discipline into my child's learning in a way I don't think I could manage. It would take someone very talented, trained and special to do that as a homeschooler so it really makes me wonder how good homeschooling can be in general.

All the learning is sneakily done through play but what they are achieving is amazing.

Well it depends what you want for your child doesn't it. I'm on kid 4, I've done private school, kumon, state all sorts and now frankly they can shove their learning outcomes up their arses. I'll be delighted if none of mine have a nervous brwakdown by the time they've been through the school system with its sneaky learning through play shit

The worlds changing at an alarming rate. Nobody will be doing things the way we did them or do them now in 10 years time

I might get slaughtered for thus but tbh in my experience some primary teachers aren't a whole lot better. How children are supposed to grasp spelling, punctuation and grammar when their teachers don't use it is beyond me. I freely admit to being a terrible snob but it pains me to go to my children's school and listen to the head say things like "right boys and girls yous have to sit quiet now.".

Well, at school they teach the "three Rs", don't they? Reading, riting and rithmetc.

yanbu.

The worst thing I ever read was a post from a woman who said she home schooled her dd who was 9. DD couldn't read but it was fine because she watched documentaries on tv and that would teach her everything.

You can home ed without knowing how to spell. I'm not sure why people are so squiffy about home ed, it is hardly as if all schools are fabulous, amazing places that nurture our children and turn out well rounded individuals is it? Besides...whatever school she went to clearly failed to educate her, right?! Wink

Loads of teachers can't spell or talk properly, or treat children properly either.

I value education. That's why I wouldn't dream of trying to dish it up myself!!

Trust the professionals (unless they are overtly batshit) Wink

Spelling and punctuation haven't changed in the many years since I was at primary school though.

I value education...which is why I wouldn't hand it over to a school. Wink

Teacher training isn't all that. It is mainly crowd control, which isn't necessary when you don't have a crowd of young kids in a room who are expected to sit still!

If only we could be sure of which professionals also valued education.

Oh dear.

I consider myself reasonably intelligent. But I could never home school in a million years!

I would be a shit teacher. I've "tutored" my three for the English part of the 11+ and it drove me to tears. I could absolutely not do it for a living or as a home schooler!
