AIBU?

Special snowflake has lost all wit...

I smiled the first time I read it for its apt usage.

Now it's 90% of the time being used as (weak) attempt to bully down opinion. Oh your child has a hint of non-conformity-well stop raising a special snowflake. Or you don't agree with me-SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE!

Even "boils my piss" never began to...well 'boil my piss' in over usage.

I guess though if this offends you, or that this is a thread about a thousand others, you are one in your books?

I don't disagree with strong opinion... But wit and humour never hurt if that's what you're actually aiming for...

Given that Mail readers seem to have taken it up in a big way, I completely agree.

MN & MNers can do what they like and use whatever phrases they like. You are not the language police.

Or are you just a special snowflake who should be pandered to?

Wink

I'm not saying people can't use it! I'm not policing language....

I'm saying it's not funny, and sounds daft.

We are quite free to be unfunny and daft sounding :-)

Trying to unpick your argument here. So, what you're saying is that if anyone doesn't mind the expression 'special snowflake', or complains that your thread is about a thousand other threads, then the indifferent/complainers must themselves be special snowflakes?

Yep tea hornet this is the gist, it's not the most serious manifesto is it.

I don't think it is supposed to be 'funny' Hmm

I agree with you OP. But then I've long thought the same about that other Mn favourite 'PFB' too.

I do t think it's a 'funny phrase'

But there are a lot of Special Snowflakes IMO Grin

*don't.

And I don't think I actually see it much on here. PFB used way more.

It's an absolutely ancient phrase that originates from the Fight Club line about not being a unique and beautiful snowflake. It's been all over the internet for about ten years.

I don't think name calling, which 'special snowflake' is, strengthens any argument. 'Special snowflake' and 'PFB' both make reference to quite derogatory stereotypes - which are not really relevant in any reasonable argument. Even if the stereotype appears to fit, it does nothing to truly aid understanding as to the context of a situation and is often used in order to shut down discussion over why certain behaviours might be occurring.

I thought it was coined by the Lego Movie!

'hacks' is the one that I think is overused.

'27 million cooking hacks that WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE'
'Make-up hacks you never knew about'
'Amazing life hacks - make a shelving unit out of toilet rolls and glitter' etc.

Fuck off.

"Hack" makes me stabby.....

Thankfully that dreadful "Are you/they on glue" seems to be fading into the dim and distant past, it was never witty or funny and the rush to be the first person to post it on a thread was pathetic.

I wish MNHQ would drop the biscuit emoticon, it is well past the sell by date.

I can't take anyone who uses the phrase 'Special snowflake' seriously.

In my mind, the poster morphs into an angsty teen haveing an argument on a gaming forum.

It's embarrassing to see adults use it.

Nooo Beyond.

All I see now is a gurning Emo teenager with floppy hair wearing a HIM hoody.

RhodaBull · 28/09/2016 09:35

Well I think it's a good phrase. It encapsulates someone who thinks they are somehow "different" when they are just the same as everyone else just more entitled. There are a lot of them about, so definitely not very special!

And don't insult my ds's HIM hoody! I think he's wearing it today...

No insults here. :o

I used to quite like them as a teen.

I can't take anyone who uses the phrase 'Special snowflake' seriously

Me neither. It ruins everything else they say, no matter how good their argument.
