To think the whole family should all eat the same meals at dinner

I am a working mum to ds10 and dd7 . At present I cook one hot meal at night and have a pretty fixed time table for dinners . I was quite surprised yesterday when my DH started saying I don't cook specially for him and that after work I should be cooking him something separate as he is "older" at 45 so he needs more fish and white meat . Kids are allergic to fish . My job is quite busy with late nights and on calls and I usually cook in bulk I was wondering if that's what most people do . Growing up my mum cooked one meal for all of us and we all ate what we were given . I can't imagine cooking different meals for us. What do the rest of you do?

We have allergies and very different timetables so rarely eat the same.
However I wouldn't be cooking a separate meal for a DH who seemed to be confusing me with catering staff. Why doesn't he cook if he wants something different? Confused

Looks like DH just volunteered ot cook 50% of the time then!

One dinner and everybody has the same. You either eat it or you don't. This is a home not a restaurant.

I have a three vegetarians, one vegan and three meat eaters in my family (5 DC) . Factor in fussiness and there could be at least 4 different meals. I keep this GS as similar as possible , with e.g. same potatoes and veg but different main part.
Its a pain but unavoidable Angry

When its your husbands turn to cook what does he make? You do take turns right?

One meal for everyone, definitely! I would only make an exception to that if one family member had multiple allergies and therefore a very restricted diet which it wouldn't be fair to impose on the others every meal.

If your dh doesn't like it he is presumably welcome to cook something different for himself when he gets in?

Sorry, random GS in there!

I cook the DC's and DH cooks ours. That's because of space and the fact that DH couldn't eat anything at 5. Smile

If he wants something different then he cooks. If you're both working why is it default that you cook?

Report
PurpleDaisies · 27/09/2016 10:35

He doesn't need different good, just a larger portion for more calories.

Does he cook at all?

ParanoidGynodroid · 27/09/2016 10:35

Why do you do all the cooking, OP?

Report
RiverTam · 27/09/2016 10:37

Usually one meal here. DH and DD are veggie so family meal are always veggie.

I'm sure you're DH can cook for himself should he not like what his working DW makes for him.

Is he always such a knob?

Is this a joke?

Why doesn't he cook for you then and you do the kids meal.

What a giant knob

I make one meal and we all eat at the same time, however I will try to be mindful of different dislikes and tastes, eg I may do a choice of veg or stick some chicken dippers in the oven if the kids aren't keen on something. (But they are served the same as us and are encouraged to at least try it.)

Your husband thinks you are his skivvy and if my DH said that to me I would laugh and tell him he knows where the kitchen is.

In theory I agree OP but we all like different things in our house. It's very difficult to find a meal that we all like - roast dinner or shepherd's pie are the best ones (made with turkey mince) and I don't want to make those every day! So I have to make different things although sometimes it's easier as I go out - eg I don't eat red meat but ds and dh do, so on a Thursday when I go out running dh cooks something for him and ds, eg lamb chops.

However, this is more about who's doing the cooking I think. If he wants something special, he can cook it.

If you are both working then cooking the evening meal ought to be a 50/50 split, unless he does 100% of another big chore.

He should appreciate that you cook for him and not be making your life more difficult.
There is only one meal cooked in our house and those who turn their nose up are welcome to leave it. I hate this attitude that everyone should demand what they want and one person has to accommodate all the different wants.
It is food...eat it or leave it.

We don't all eat at the same time as DH is rarely home before 8pm, but we all eat the same food. I just keep it warm until DH is home.

No way would I prep 2 different meals.

I only cook one meal, as does dh when he does the cooking, and everyone is expected to eat it.

Only recently due to the baby's dairy intolerance do I sometimes cook something seperate for me so that others can still have pizza or lasagne or a few other breaks that involve dairy.

Your dh needs to cook for himself if he wants more fishShock

I would never be able to have a strict "we all eat the same thing" because theres not many meals we all like. Generally there is something in the slow cooker or my DH (hes a childminder) shoves something in the oven for the boys at 5 ish. I cook ours plus my eldest sons when I come home form work and me and DH like completely different things to.

But for me its no extra work or hassle and I dont mind (a) because my DH doesnt demand or expect (b) I want to make him dinner he actually wants, not just what I want and (c) he does the vast majority of all the rest of the housework, I think I get the better deal!

One meal here unless it's something like a spicy curry. Dh and ds only eat battered fish and dd and I love salmon so on a fish day we have salmon, they have battered fish and we have the same potatoes and veg.

One meal and if you don't like it, you don't eat it/make your own. He's a grown man for heaven's sake.
