I want to buy a special present for my cousin. He's 27, single, introverted, science-y, lives in the USA, not a big spender himself. My budget is around £75 (range £50-100). No special occasion; just seeing him for the first time in several years, and his dad is terminally ill so want to give him something to make him feel... well, loved, I suppose.

Ideas so far are:

  • a posh pen (which brands are the best for my price range? Parker? Waterman?)
  • a watch (though I guess you can't get any of the best brands for this budget)
  • leather notebook/wallet/etc (once again, suggestions for brands would be appreciated)

It'll have to be something generic and unoriginal, I'm afraid, because I don't really know what he's into nowadays.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have any photos of him and his dad together that you could frame? Or even just a nice pic of his dad?

To answer your actual question: No YANBU to ask for gift suggestions on MN. I've started two threads since being on MN asking for gift suggestions and both timed MNers came up trumps.

Is it possible to stalk him a bit on Social media? Find out what he's into? In what way is he Science-y?

Notonthehighstreet does some great quality and original gifts. If he likes science what about these cufflinks made from watch parts. There are some others on there. Some really expensive ones too that I think move like watches!

Would you be able to get hold of any family photos and get them framed, or put on a mug or something? Is there anything he used to do together with his dad?

Could you get him a subscription to a science magazine?

Is he into 'steampunk' at all? Some pretty cool watches in that style on amazon!

A canvas of him and his dad?

I like cufflinks a PP mentioned.

I have to be honest, most of those things are much cheaper there than in the U.K. How about a gift pack of quintessentially British foods?
