about Sunday morning deliveries?

Ocado has just finishing delivering to my neighbour. They came at 7.45 on a Sunday morning. They made loads of noise between the van noise and the banging around of the baskets or whatever they're called. AIBU to think that this is too early on a Sunday morning when people are trying to get a lie in? This is the second time Ocado have delivered to these neighbours before 8am on a Sunday. Am I being precious?

Yes, it's your neighbours that have chosen that slot so it's not Ocado's fault. Actually Ocado offer slots from as early as 5.30am! Wonder how many people choose that one?!

If I need to select a weekend morning I always go with Saturday and don't have it come before 8am. The only reason I've had to choose these times when ideally I'd prefer it to come on a Friday evening, was I was always dropping off up the motorway for contact with their dad so a Friday night was hard to do.

In terms of me being woken up by a neighbour having an early grocery delivery, it wouldn't matter anyway. Since I've lived in this house I've not been able to sleep in after 8.30 am on any weekend as next door's kids start thundering round the house, banging up and down the stairs, slamming doors, shouting and screaming at full on high pitch and volume! Little sods, and the parents clearly don't care and don't teach them any respect.

I too would be annoyed at getting woken up but it's one of those ones where if you say something (as I've done to my neighbours) you'll be labelled as an absolute cow (as I was!!) for mentioning something that is definitely unreasonable.

What tends to indicate that they might not be receptive to any comments is that they would have thought about the timing of their delivery for themselves without anyone needing to say anything because their natural respect for other people would have seen to that. Apparently it didn't occur to them....

I guess it could just be a one-off or two-off for some particular reason, and they might not do it again??

Yes it's the neighbours fault. They're pretty inconsiderate in general tbh. The thing is the bloody van both times has decided to park in front of our house, right under our bedroom. I'd have been getting up soon anyway. I just prefer a more gentle awakening on a Sunday than waking up to vrmmm vrmmm bang bang bang bang!

Yes Pollyanna the fact they have selected the slot shows they don't have any awareness of others around them. When they first moved in they did a lot of work but the workmen were starting before 8, making lots of noise and it went on for weeks. Dh, who is very laid back, flipped one morning when the men were using a cement mixer at 7.30am. I persuaded him not to go over and complain by saying it's good to have neighbours who look after their property! Perhaps we should have said something back then.

Is it the neighbours fault? Or is it Occado's fault for offering early Sunday slots? And maybe late night slots shouldn't be offered?
Most people don't see Sunday as being any different to any other day now...work and shipping go on 24/7.

Personally I don't think YABU OP, but neither is the neighbour. They probably just want to get on with their life. I think Occado should be aware their service might not be appropriate at certain times of the day.

I won't say anything to the neighbours. They don't care. I just wondered if the driver was delivering earlier than he should because I didn't realise any of the supermarkets offered slots st that time on a Sunday.

Some people are awake first thing on a Sunday. Some people have a lie in on Wednesdays. Some people are asleep in bed on a Friday afternoon. You can't really be precious about a Sunday morning lie in when everyone's life is different.

Ocado delivery from 5.30am to 11.30pm now even on Sundays. Sundays have lost their 'special' status in recent years.

I understand it is annoying to be woken up though.

Let's hope for you that isn't going to be their regular slot.

Of course she wouldn't be bothered if it was a weekday Tubby (I wouldn't imagine - that's her call). Sundays may have become shopping days like any other, but I'd bet that the majority of people would at least like the opportunity to not be forcibly awoken due to noise before 9am - I don't think that's an unreasonable minimum expectation to have. Sadly it seems, almost impossible to achieve but there you go.

Er, ok Tubby... at no point did I say that I expect there to be silence. There wouldn't be silence no matter where you went. What I was saying was that in as a very GENERAL expectation many people will have a different view on what they might expect on weekend days when a great many people are off work. Unfortunately, a great many of us are stuck with our staggeringly and completely disrespectful rude and selfish neighbours who don't give a toss how much noise they make - even when it's entirely within their control to not disturb the neighbours around them - because we can't move anywhere else. I think generally in life there's been a significant reduction in the overall respect for the privacy of others and the ability of neighbours etc to retain 'quiet enjoyment' of their homes without endless disturbance. All it takes is a little bit of effort and not being entirely thoughtless.

The thing is though, to me 745 on a Sunday morning is fine. I've been up for ages by then. I hate people doing DIY or making a row on weekend afternoons because that's the only time I have to relax but that would be considered reasonable to most people.

Well, I don't think 7:45 is particularly unsociable for a delivery which takes a couple of minutes. You don't know what sleep/work/quiet enjoyment hours everyone living around you keeps.

I think the delivery drivers need to try and be a little more quiet. I am sure they don't need to make all the noise they do.

Undoubtedly the delivery drivers are held to considerable account as to how fast they're meant to complete each drop whilst still being friendly and professional and not slinging the crates against your front door! I had a delivery once and the guy was on the van for nearly 10 minutes shoving boxes around - some lemon at the depot had loaded it in completely the reverse order to what it needed to be. Thought the poor bloke was never gonna come out of there - and it was really noisy but thankfully I think it was something like an 11am delivery so I wasn't as stressed as I would have been about disturbing the neighbours if it had been 2.5 hours or so earlier.

Everyone's different on the times they like to get up and what other odd times of the day they like it to be quiet so clearly you can't please everyone all at the same time. Simply put, if more folk took just 5 minutes to think before they let their kids out into the garden at sparrow fart of a morning or had a noisy delivery early in the morning, whatever it is you're going to do which could be something which could cause a negative issue to a neighbour, then 90% of these problems wouldn't occur in the first place.

Despite my neighbours having been consistently noisy because they completely incapable of disciplining their children I still come down on my children like a tonne of bricks if I think they're doing something that would disturb either set of neighbours in our row of three houses of which I am in the middle. I hope that they are getting the message about being respectful; one can only hope.
