To think that scholarships for women shouldn't be open to men?

So, scholarship to support women in STEM - a massive issue for all societies that we're not harnessing th talents of half our populations in this area.

But if you "identify as a woman in a way that's meaningful to you" you can apply.

What the ever loving fuck?

Another example of the damage being done to actual women, by saying that "woman" is a feeling in a man's head.

Fuxache angry

Yanbu. Women are being pushed down to the bottom yet again to support men. Grotesquely offensive.

ConvincingLiar Tue 20-Sep-16 20:01:14

If they're giving out a scholarship they can set the criteria. I think it's highly unlikely to be awarded to a bloke who's put on a dress in the hope of getting some cash.

RunningLulu Tue 20-Sep-16 20:02:11

YABU and transphobic to boot. I'm reporting this.

VeraTheVestigialVirgin Tue 20-Sep-16 20:02:39

What the fuck has identifying as a woman "in a way that's significant to me" separate from biology to do with the reasons that women find it difficult to enter STEM fields on an equal footing? That could mean anything and makes a mockery of the whole thing, surely.

BeyondASpecialSnowflake Tue 20-Sep-16 20:04:44

Running, would you care to elaborate on what exactly is transphobic?
Or just throw in the "t bomb" and run off?

BombadierFritz Tue 20-Sep-16 20:05:06

the sad thing is that there are plenty of utter dickheads out there who will be quite happy to tick the box and claim the scholarship. its a phrase with almost no meaning at all to it.

Deejeebee Tue 20-Sep-16 20:05:15

This is the age we live in you can either complain about it or get with it!
That's just how it works if a man "identifies" as a woman he'll be offered the same opertunites it's only fair and vice versa.
I don't think any damage is being done to women 😑

Nakupenda Tue 20-Sep-16 20:05:54

I never actually realised how transphobic Mumsnet is. Ugh.

Two and counting...

Nakupenda Tue 20-Sep-16 20:07:58

Clearly option 2 is for transgender males, living their life is a woman.

Highly doubt a man living fully as a man could just show up and take the scholarship.

HermioneWeasley Tue 20-Sep-16 20:08:03

deejeebee but equality of opportunity is exactly the point. Do you think it's just a freak accident that the half of the population born with one reproductive system are massively under represented in STEM studies and (highly paid) careers?

The barriers to women entering aren't experienced by men - that's the whole point of needing to offer scholarships.

BeyondASpecialSnowflake Tue 20-Sep-16 20:08:11

Yummy gets partial credit for not just throwing the "t bomb"...

Before anyone says don't read if you're not intrested: I clicked on this thinking it would be an interesting example of actual sexism. But instead it's just mumsnet having another pop at trans-women. This rhetoric needs to stop. It reflects really badly on all of us.

BeyondASpecialSnowflake Tue 20-Sep-16 20:09:12

What on earth would a poor man in America want with a fully paid scholarship, eh?

MaudGonneMad Tue 20-Sep-16 20:10:29

Genuine trans cases will have endured more difficulties than any poor little woman

What a clear example of the misogyny inherent in the pro-trans movement.

HermioneWeasley Tue 20-Sep-16 20:10:38

Of gosh nightdress since you've put such a reasoned argument forward of course we'll just all STFU

I'd hate for anything to "reflect badly on us". What will the neighbours think?

dybil Tue 20-Sep-16 20:11:07

Another day another trans thread. Maybe we can we just pass a resolution to confirm that mumsnet does not consider trans women to be women, stick it on the banner of the website and then not have this discussion every day.

FWIW, I think YABU but I know I'm in the minority on here.

Nakupenda Tue 20-Sep-16 20:11:28

What would a man want with a life of stigma for taking hormones and transitioning to as close to female as he can get eh?? hmm

BeyondASpecialSnowflake Tue 20-Sep-16 20:12:36

Naku, you're clearly a tad behind the times from that comment. No need to transition anything to call oneself woman anymore.

HermioneWeasley Tue 20-Sep-16 20:12:41

Yes, poor old Caitlyn Jenner eh? No crappy women have suffered as much as they have.

And paedophile rapist Davina Ayrton. And Murderer Claire Darbyshire. No woman's suffering has ever been as great as theirs.

SweetAndFullOfGrace Tue 20-Sep-16 20:13:05

I genuinely despair. Half the population of the world, discriminated against because of our biology, and now apparently biology is just an inconvenient aspect of being a woman (vs an underpinning key factor in the history of women's subjugation). And all the hard won freedoms and recognition of a power imbalance are being chipped away at because what is going on inside someone's head is apparently now the only relevant criteria for being a woman these days. If it wasn't really happening it would be a good sequel to The Handmaid's Tale.
