Sweaty child - wool pillow?

My 5 yo DS is a very sweaty sleeper. It's worse with the hot muggy nights we've been having, but it's still quite significant on cooler nights.

Tonight for instance I checked on him and even though he's just in a pull up (still wetting at night, that's another issue) with a sheet rather than a duvet (his usual duvet is one tog) he is still clammy and his head and pillow are dripping wet with sweat. Windows are open, fan is on. He's sweaty on winter nights too. He sleeps on a terry towelling waterproof sheet under a fitted sheet (due to leaky pull ups).

I've been looking at getting a wool pillow and duvet as they are supposed to be great at regulating body temperature, however they are so expensive. Has anyone here tried them and are they worth the cost?

Sorry I know it's not an aibu but I wasn't sure where to post!

NOOOOO! We have a wool duvet and it's awful! It's heavy and doesn't breathe. It's virtually impossible to wash, (as the weight of it wet is too heavy for the machine) takes forever to dry, (and weighs a shit-time so hanging it up is a two person job) etc. It stinks of BO and SO (sheep odor) and I think one vomit or toileting accident would have been the end of it. Don't do it to yourself!!!

We have a wool mattress protector which might help in your case as it would be more breathable. Nothing gets through it and you can tumble dry it. Very different from a duvet.

We've also got a wool pillow but it's only a baby one so not sure whether it made any difference.

Oh and they don't smell of sheep at all. They're from the Natural Mat Company.

Maybe it's just mine then... was a wedding present (a million years ago - and in Australia)

No help here, but as I have sweaty night children I am interested in the replies too!

Thanks, I needed that advice before I wasted £££ on bedding! I've read the hype so it's good to get an honest review!

Was replying to justilou as that was the only reply I saw. Thanks girlsinthegarden, I'll do a bit mire research. Maybe just a pillow as his head is particularly sweaty?

All my children turn in to sweaty hot messes a soon as they fall asleep so even worse when hot. I usually go for cotton with pillow and mattress protector. I also put fan in their rooms on hot nights and a cold air humidifier

Mattress protector sounds a good idea.

dh is exactly the same (my theory why he's so bloody thin).

OP, we have exactly the same issue with our DS and bought him a John Lewis wool pillow in desperation. It didn't make a blind bit of difference. We're now using a thin, normal pillow and just flipping it over/ changing the pillowcases bloody constantly!

I air their beds daily and change pillow protector and cover every couple of days

My ds1 is a sweaty sleeper - almost 6 and still in pull ups too.
He has the thinnest 4 tog duvets from ikea and even in winter he sweats.

We have a Baavet duvet on our bed and ds1 would expire if he slept under it I think so I really wouldn't get one for him (though I love ours as I feel the cold)

I think it's supposed to be that their body heat regulation hasn't matured yet? We change the duvet every few months (they do as dog beds) and use pillow protectors. Still having leaky nights so the waterproof sheets protect the mattress. Looking into washable pants there

Not much help - but you are not alone !

Just out of interest, have any of these sweaty children had their Vit D levels checked?

I'm having to research all sorts of vitamin things at the mo and this was a point on one ofthe sites.

I saved up for a year to get us and dd a silk filled duvet. It does the same as wool but is not heavy. Best thing ever. I did not bother with the pillows, but if your problem is a sweaty head go for it.

I have a Baavet and pillows by the same company and I LOVE them.

I'd like to know as well, DH is a nightmare for sweating.

I run hot at night, fry an egg on me hot. DP read a wool duvet would be great for me so bought one. No sheep smell but stupidly heavy.

Nope I sweat just as bad or worse under that too. It's now reserved for deep winter use only.

I'd say a wool pillow will have the same effect.

We have duvets from baavet. All wool, no smell and lightweight. They are great

I spent extra on a decent mattress protector (waterproof) which is miles better than the horrible plastic backed terry towelling ones. I've slept on the cheap ones and they feel so hot and nasty. This one is much better

If any of these sweaty kids are also snoring and tired all the time, do get their tonsils looked at. DS1 used to pour with sweat at night. It was a symptom of sleep apnoea.

I would look at alternatives to the waterproof sheet before spending loads as that will make him sweat, would cotton towels under cotton sheet be enough to stop leaks onto mattress?

Interesting - my dd is a sweaty sleeper (hence the better mattress protector) and snores. She does have very big tonsils but they won't do anything about it as she's not had tonsillitis enough times Hmm
