AIBU to think some posts on here are over exaggerated?

Some posts in this section seem to be stories that wouldn't look out of place in a soap like Eastenders. Some posts I read I ask myself can this be true? Or am I just been cynical?

It's like people telling stories in RL - they often exaggerate or twist the truth to get a certain message across

Yanbu. However I've seen/been in situations in real life that I know if posted online people would yell 'bollocks that happened!' so I'm cynical to a point.

I'd say a good many are fictitious, maybe as many as a quarter.?
RL can be like a soap opera though,.

Event the more believable ones are mostly full of OTT language like

"MIL demanded a school photo"

"The cashier sneered and said..."

"The kids were paraded around"

I think some people are automatically unreasonable if they need to add those things, to get people onside.

But I do find it amusing and I like to play a little game of adjective bingo with myself. I particularly like "He waltzed in from the pub". I just assume they're married to Len Goodman

I really do think that some people love to have minor things happen so they can make it into a huge story for mumsnet. Mind you, some of them are rather wonderfully entertaining.

On the other hand, I have seen things and had things happen to me which you just couldn't add into a soap opera as the viewers would think it was completely unbelievable.

I am always cynical when people recount an exchange where they claim to have done the famous mumsnet 'head tilt'(tm) while spouting some patronising bollocks to the object of their ire. I can't help but think if anyone was spoken to like that their response would not have been the chastised silence that the OP claims but a resounding fuck off while quite possibly being made to wear their cup of coffee for good measure.

Don't forget those people being so angry they 'stormed' out of the school/restaurant/shop. It always conjures up images of tables being overturned, people being pushed onto their arses and doors ripped off their hinges.

I've seen an online post about a real life situation I witnessed. The OP didn't actually lie but it was certainly written entirely from her own perspective and at least one key bit of information missed out.

The responses to her post would have been rather less sympathetic had they read my version.


It's a bit like the Watchdog programme on TV, the stories are less sympathetic when you have full details of the companies' side of the story.

I think some are exaggerated, especially when the thread isn't going how the op expects so they drip feed lots of worse and worse things.

I think some aren't really exaggerated but as they are told from one perspective, they tend to be one sided. And if it's happened while people are stressed or upset they can unintentionally exaggerate.

But I also think some people are telling the truth. I don't ever post about my dbro and sil because people would not believe the stuff they have done. People who have actually witnessed their behaviour have a hard time processing it. So I can imagine that plenty are true and told in a fairly accurate way.
