To think my Dyson vacuum should last longer than 7 years?

That's it really. I have a Dyson upright dc24 ball which we were given as a wedding present by bro&sis in law and I was so excited to finally be getting a proper vacuum cleaner, and a Dyson at that, and just assumed it would be good quality and would last for 10 - 20 years.
We had so many problems with it in the 5 years it was under warranty that they actually replaced the head on it as apparently that model was riddled with problems but it's still not very good at its job and is making a terrible noise and I, possibly irrationally, hate it. But can't afford to buy a new one.

YANBU- mine is around 10 years old and still going strong. For the amount you pay for them, you expect it to last.

dyson is known for being flimsy all style .I got a henry now thats a vacuum that lasts a decade.Had mine 5 years never had a problem and still going strong

YANBU- I'm also cross mine has broken after 5.5 years. The repair costs £99 so not sure if I should just get a new one

I think seven years is a good length of time for an appliance.

Miele are supposed to be good so maybe try them next

They need regularly taking to bits which is annoying. I basically dismantled mine at the weekend as there was stuff stuck in the hose, hair round the bar, filters needed cleaning - they're cool-looking but I don't think they're actually that sturdy. That said they're not that expensive nowadays either - our new one was about 220 so I think 7 years is a good return on that money. Cheapo ones die after a couple of years in my experience.

YANBU They're made of the same thing as crash helmets so I expect them to last at least a decade!

I have a Miele, going strong after years of use with no problems. I think their appliances have a 10 year warranty (not sure which appliances are included).

Dysons are overpriced, noisy, flimsy rubbish. Get a Miele instead.

My dyson is 14 years old. It's been repaired twice. New motor most recently. Dyson quoted a fortune. Local shop repaired for less than half the price £89 IIRC.
I think newer models of dyson shave been made with a different plastic supplier. Not as good. Maybe Google for that info. Try a local repair shop.

Dyson are horrible overpriced lumps of gaudy plastic. Judging by the number I see dumped for collection/recycling, I wouldn't ever buy one. My miele just goes on and on, working perfectly.

I honestly thought a dyson would be of similar quality to a Miele and we wouldn't need another for at least another few years. I don't think I can be bothered getting it repaired. Miele it is!

My friend hated his Dyson so much that whilst it was underperforming as usual one day, he threw it down the stairs in a fit of temper.

I have a DC02 cylinder model which is practically a museum piece. I was given it by a friend when she emigrated in 2002 and it was already at least 4 years old then. I replaced its filters and treated it to some new accessories a few years ago. Had to scrabble around various places on t'internet for old stick of the parts as Dyson laughed at me when I tried to order from them as they hadn't made spares for that model in a long time. It's not used much these days as we also have a DC54 handheld but the old DC02 still works when needed. I guess they don't build them like that any more.

I just checked and we got ours in 1997. It is still going strong, but they aren't repairing them any more which is a pity because I love it.

Two years ago just after the 5 year warranty expired I was on the phone to customer service organising yet another repair (which they were doing for free given how many problems we'd had) and the woman told me our model had been plagued with problems and suggested I try one of the newer models which were much better. I politely declined but perhaps I do just have a really shit model?!

We had every part bar the wheels replaced on one. None if the replacements had any warranty on them so when the next few bits died I gave it to the lical Dyson specialist repair man, see if he could make any use of it, and bought a Miele.

Really? Mine is 14 years and still going strong. Mind, it gets cleaned, de-haired and gutted every 6 months. I love it and have converted my family to Dysons-theyre just fab as long as you maintain it. Last year we had to replace the motor housing-£20 on Amazon, we fixed it ourselves.
I work in a recycling centre and we get so many people dumping decent Dysons because they 'dont work'. Happily, all they need is a clean! We test them, then sell them!! :)
