NRTFT - too long!
How rude! To me that means: All your opinions are irrelevant read mine mine I tell you mine it's the only one that counts.

OP posts:

It's a pet hate of mine too.

The worst ones are where the op has admitted they were in the wrong but people keep turning up to have a go at them, not even having bothered to just read the op's posts to see if anything had changed.

Or the ones that turn up after fifteen pages to suggest something really obvious, prefaced by "I don't know if anyone's thought of this yet but..."

Nothing wrong with not reading the whole thread, especially if it is a very long one...but they should at least read the op's posts.

I don't always read the full thread...i'll scan it, but every post over 14 pages - um nope, probably not.

Meh. Sometimes I CBA reading 798 posts with a 10 minute opportunity but want to chip in. I always read the OPs posts though in case anything has changed through the course of the thread

I always read the OP's posts but not always everyone else's comments. On the 15 page threads, i tend to only read the OP's posts, first few pages and the last one before posting.

I wish MN would make it easier to read the Op's posts. I know they allow them to be coloured differently, but they are still easy to miss on a 900 post thread. I use the find function in chrome but that doesn't work so well on the my phone.

You've posted this twice OP

Perhaps each OP should have a TL:DR at the end?

var. I have an iPad & an iPhone so I'm not sure if this is apple or google facilitated but I type the name in the search bar then down the bottom there's a bit that says 'on this page' and if you tap that a bit comes up on the bottom to show how many times the name is on the page & arrows to click to the next (or previous) time. It's much easier than I've made it sound 😁

Yes - I do love the 'Oh I've not read the thread, but have you considered xyz?' that cannot, not have been mentioned eleventy billion times on the previous 15 pages. Idiot.

To me, the rudeness, or arrogance, is in the attitude of posters that their post must be read before anyone gives an opinion. The reader responds personally to the problem or issue raised by the OP - the opinions of others are irrelevant. Each makes a personal and direct response, hopefully.

Unless they are MN obsessives who just want to curry favour with other regulars.

But Timely Tess most people are saying at least read the OPs posts otherwise your post might not be relevant. In 15 pages the OP has generally changed their view point somewhat.

Report
LyraMortalia · 11/09/2016 09:03

I see what you mean Timely but generally it's used by posters adding a personal anecdote or opinion that is no longer relevant or useful because the thread has moved on. If a thread is too long for the poster to bother to read the OP's posts updates and responses just don't post on it.

And yes every time I start a thread on my kindle it appears twice Hmm

I put it as a shorthand for 'gosh that's long and if this has been dismissed already don't flame me but what about...'

I've used it before but always read the op updates. If you are too lazy to read their updates what's the point in commenting? Why would what you say be so special? Fair enough if you cross post if it's fast moving but otherwise you could just be completely wrong.

I saw an op once post something in relationships and as she updated it became very obvious that her parents were toxic and she even admitted abuse had happened but just hadn't seen it as awful enough to view as abuse before postern pointend it out. Then along comes several posters, after pages of op updating and getting support, who flame the poor op by twisting her first post and ignoring the revealing updates. Which then really upset the op because they mirrored her parents views and made her question.

I wish there was a way for the OP to update her original post, ie, add an EDIT to the bottom.

You get people berating the OP for pages and pages long after the poor sod has waved the white flag. Sad

PGPsabitch · 11/09/2016 11:09

That would be really good idea very. When I used to use live journal it was so handy to see the post edited to add things. It would also help if the op accidently name changed mid thread too.
