AIBU?

eBay and sizing, any help?

I sold some boys school trousers on eBay listed as size 5-6. I commonly thought that size 5-6 was a size 5 TO a size 6. The trousers themselves say size 5 (I accept my mistake on the advert).

The buyer wants to return them as she is saying that size 5 means a size UP to 5 and it is not the standard size 5 sizing.

I was going to say, yes, I do apologise that the sizing isn't exactly as per the label but it is a size 5 so should fit until size 6. If they don't fit exactly, well that's down to John Lewis and my advert does say no returns.

You advertised them incorrectly so I am sorry yabu and both eBay and PayPal will side with the buyer as they are not as listed

And apparently saying No Returns is meaningless, as they usually can.

No returns means fuck all if the item is damaged or not as described. In this case item is not as described. You will need to refund/accept the return. Personally i'd just refund without getting the item back as its lots of fuss and cost (you will also need to cover the cost for return postage) that you'll likely lose more than you'd recoup by reselling.

Can I ask though...

Does size 5 mean UP TO size 5, as she claims? The buyer is complaining that the waist is 3cm too small from a 'regular' size 5.

My interpretation is 5 is 5 up to 6.
But 5-6 is five to 6 and up to 7.
So 5-6 is always bigger than 5.

IMO listing a size 5 as a 5-6 is misadvertised and is cause for a refund.

I'd think 5 and 5-6 are the same size, to fit someone aged 5 (until they are 6).
Even if 5-6 is a bit bigger, there is no way that "size 5" means "up to 5 and not beyond it".

Next boys clothes for younger boys come in sizes 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 etc and then the older boys clothes start at age '3', '4', '5' etc. I find the size '5' is the same as the age 4-5 ones in the two different ranges so I would expect size 5 to be for up to 5 years old.

Yes cakes is right.

So for example age 4-5 fits up to 116cm, and age 5 is also up to 116cm. I used to sell used children's clothes for a living so I am quite au fait with this!

Where John Lewis clothing is concerned if it says age X rather then X-Y it will be slightly smaller. I have been caught out on this with my dd on jeans I have ordered in their sale.

Next jeans also come up smaller if age X opposed to X-Y
