eg. ssd(13)

then I would know to avoid new posters who seem to be ready for a fight at every turn

It's the only forum I've used that doesn't give some indication of how much each person has used the forum, most have different levels that show up, so if you've posted under a hundred times you're a 'newbie' or 100-500 'getting chattier' or whatever (that's not what the levels are called just an example)

I'm a relatively new poster and I really don't like getting into fights on here.

I think an all time post count (regardless of name change) would be far more interesting. Or scary when you see just how many posts you've done Grin

makingacupoftea · 07/09/2016 18:36

I think that would make me feel old - I have name changed a lot but been here years and years. I like the feeling of a shiny new name!

musicposy · 07/09/2016 18:39

I agree - put the suggestion in site stuff.

I suppose the worry is it might lead to cliqueyness and new posters who genuinely need help being ignored, but it wouldn't half put a stop to a load of the rubbish.

I've also been in the situation where troll has been called on me (I was being unreasonable, but I wasn't a troll!) and if it said musicposy (8 years) beside my name people would be less likely to do this, maybe.

elQuintoConyo · 07/09/2016 18:39

Meh. Do you think it'd make a difference to goady fuckets?

Report
facepalming · 07/09/2016 18:39

what do you think would be gained by it? Do you thibk someone's input would be more or less valuable in relation to how many times they've posted?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 07/09/2016 18:40

Problem is that there are people on here sad enough to spot

Milk (1234)... ooh NewName (1235)

and then troll you round the boards going "I know who you are".

I'm sorry if I insulted new posters, I know most new posters will be decent

I'm just sick of the ones who seem hellbent on being nasty

it didnt used to be like this here and in 13 years I've never noticed before

the older, wiser posters seem to be disappearing and newer, vile people seem to be pilling in

I miss the old days!

guess I'm getting old.

But some of the fighty people have been here a long time as well.

Talking to people based on how long they've been around is both wanky and unreliable as a method.

What about long term trolls?

Report
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/09/2016 18:43

Interesting. Not sure how I feel about it.

I don't think namechanging should be allowed though, unless excellent reason for it. That gives leeway for goady fuckers.

I miss the old days too - I am actually old. I've never name-changed apart from seasonal ones and even then it's obviously me. I hate that we can't have a laugh without saying lighthearted and that everyone gets so fucking offended about things. And I really don't mean people being offended about goady fuckers but the people who get offended about the sun rising in the morning.

Report
AnnaMarlowe · 07/09/2016 18:43

But the point is you don't know who is new. The new goady posters and the old nice ones could be the same people.

Oblomov16 · 07/09/2016 18:43

I don't think I've had need to mention how long I'd been here, like ssd 13 years also, till the other day, and I was nigh on told off for being boastful, as if the fact I'd supported certain groups for 13 years, is a bit boastful. Which I guess it is a bit.
Might intimidate newbies? And might seem a bit cliquey?

I thought mine was public but apparently not (posting since October 2003)

So would you be less inclined to engage with newusereleventymillion (2 weeks)than Ivebeenhereyears (15)? I'm a relative newbie (about 3 years) and I remember how scary that first post was. If I thought I was going to be ignored by the older hands then I'd be less inclined to post. And you could get a split site, where older hands only talked to similar.
(But I'd agree there are some not nice people about)

facepalming · 07/09/2016 18:53

It seems a bit as though people use how long they've been here as a way to feel superior. I think it's refreshing that that's not the case here.

We've all met that person in the office that feels self important becuse they've sat in the same chair for the last twenty years...

scaryteacher · 07/09/2016 18:54

If you whack ssd into the search function it shows the years of your posts, so some for ssd are from 06 etc.

where did those 8 years go Shock

VladmirsPoutine · 07/09/2016 18:55

No this is awful. To be honest I detest these sort of ideas because if you can't cope with a parenting forum then you probably shouldn't be online.

I've probably been posting for 2 years - only asking my own questions not responding to threads till j got the app on my phone (yay!) but it does feel like there is a superiority complex amongst a few old timers. It always perplexes me at the beginning of some threads when people say " I've name changed but have been here for X amount of years " as if they will be ignored if they can't prove how long they've been here Sad
Trolls and nasty people suck I agree but a genuine opinion of one who has been here a day should count as much as one who has been here years.
