AIBU?

To not know how to deal with two faced people?

I don't know whether I'm just very observant or read too much into things but I find two faced people really difficult to deal with whereas others seem to let it go over their heads.

For example I worked in an office and there was a small group of people in a team that seemed to be constantly gossiping about others and taking the piss out of people.

I was sitting near them and I'd hear them saying really nasty things, mimicking people's accents, saying people were crap at their jobs, calling people freaks and weirdos, gossiping about them and things they apparently knew, sniggering when certain people walked past.

I don't think I was supposed to hear or they thought they were talking in code but I heard it all on a daily basis.

What was particularly hard to take was I was friends with some of the people they were doing it about, but to everyone else the gossips were the loveliest, politest people you could meet.

So I'd get a good friend saying "X and y are so lovely and helpful", but I'd heard them saying all sorts about my friend not long before.

I felt like I was the only one who could see it but I could hardly go around telling the whole office what they said about people. It was a waste of time reporting it because the team leader was the worst gossip of them all but was in all fairness good at their job and the managements go to person.

The fact that I seemed to be the only one that had a problem with this group of gossips made me feel like I was going mad.

I should have said, although that was one of the worst situations I find two faced people in general hard to take.

Whenever I hear gossip I always think that if they're saying that about someone else then what do they say about me, and it makes me not trust the person.

Can you make a joke out of it as they are gossiping? 'Are you lot being unkind? I'm going to bring headphones/ear plugs with me tomorrow'
