...to think that most people in the Marvel universe lead really unhappy lives?

I want to like it, I think some of the plots are great and love the settings/costume design etc. handsome men and there's some great humour too. I just can't get over how miserable life is for everybody.

It doesn't seem to bother anybody else I know, but I'm about to give up on Agents of Shield because everybody has such a traumatic backstory or current story. I really enjoyed the start of it (them all on the bus, getting to know each other, working together) but it's just got more and more sad for all of them!

Even if you're not one of the main characters you're at risk of being blown up, forced to kill each other on a nice night out at the cinema, generally swatted aside as if you don't matter...

Is there any Marvel that's a bit 'nicer' I could watch to get back into it? It keeps making me cry at the moment blush

superheros need something to make them who they are.

Batman is batman because of what happened to his parents.

You should watch Guardians Of The Galaxy. I love it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Wed 31-Aug-16 19:41:56

I'll have a look at that one, thank you smile I think I want a bit more fun peril rather than peril and discovering a horrendous secret, or peril and getting brain damage, or peril and being betrayed...

I do like the old Batman in his tights. Perhaps I want Marvel to be slightly camper grin

Guardians of The Galaxy is fun. The soundtrack is amazing as well.

In the Marvel world there are major threats to the world. If there wasnt there wouldnt be a need for super heroes. They need to be forged in fire smile to cope with it. (both human agents and super heroes)

I was devastated when Ward was revealed as Hydra, so not fair! he is gorgeous.

Iron man is less 'serious' cos of his self absorbtion in the first couple of films. Although it would be infuriating to be 'Pepper' its fun to watch.

I like the fact that although bad things keep happening they keep their sense of humour and their sense of family, their loyalty. Although not sure what Daisy is up to now or why, is it just rebellion at the world after all she went through, lack of purpose/rage/feeling she doesnt belong anywhere once she was 'free' from 'Hive' again? I do know that Coulson (sigh smile) will eventually save the day, one way or another, he rocks smile

A lot of the actual comic book stuff is very dark. Have you tried the DC comics/other Marvel comics?

YouTheCat Wed 31-Aug-16 20:07:32

Guardians of the Galaxy will have you sobbing in the first 5 minutes, so be warned. But it is brilliant.

I love all the Marvel films/tv programmes. Loved Agent Carter and a bit gutted it's been cancelled.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Wed 31-Aug-16 20:14:44

I've read quite a few of the WW2 ones (had a flatmate who did their dissertation on comics as propaganda) but nothing very recent!

Grant is gorgeous to look at, although character-wise I prefer Coulson. I'm torn between wanting to keep up with them and wanting to pretend nothing else bad is happening to them!

YANBU. It's full of unhappy back stories and dramatic bad stuff that they have to try to avert despite the personal cost.

But then, it'd be really dull to watch if they all had happy, well balanced upbringings with no dark secrets, and no bad stuff ever happened.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Wed 31-Aug-16 20:23:41

Perhaps it just isn't great to binge watch (for me)? Maybe if I spread it out a bit more it won't seem quite so bad!

MrsJoeyMaynard Wed 31-Aug-16 20:26:01

Which series are you on? Series 4 hasn't started yet, has it?

user7755 Wed 31-Aug-16 20:26:20

Another recommendation for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Antman's OK too.

So is Thor, no misery there except that I'm miserable that I'm not enjoying regular and rampant sex with him

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Wed 31-Aug-16 20:29:20

No, don't worry! I've got a couple of episodes of 3 left. But US series so often end with a horrible cliffhanger, and I'm not sure I can cope grin

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig Wed 31-Aug-16 20:33:20

I haven't seen Agents of Shield in ages. Can anybody explain to me why Sky is now called Daisy? confused

StarryIllusion Wed 31-Aug-16 20:35:24

Try Iron Man. Still horrible traumatic life events but a bit more lighthearted for the most part and RDJ is hilarious as Tony. The sheer ego and humour in the second half makes it less of an upsetting story.

MrsJoeyMaynard Wed 31-Aug-16 20:38:10

Skye was reunited with her birth parents, who had named her Daisy when she was born, and she subsequently decided to go by Daisy instead of Skye.

greathat Wed 31-Aug-16 20:57:37

Aw I love a bit of Iron Man. If he was real person I'd HATE him, but the films are good fun smile

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Wed 31-Aug-16 22:14:35

It's his dad in Agent Carter isn't it?

Also, Coulson is married to Jennifer Grey in real life!

RestlessTraveller Wed 31-Aug-16 22:20:34

I'd pretty happy if I was Dr. Jane Foster.

YouTheCat Wed 31-Aug-16 22:42:37

Yes, it's his dad in Agent Carter.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig Wed 31-Aug-16 23:24:07

Oh right, thanks MrsJoeyMaynard, I'd never have guessed that. I thought she was some sort of alien clone or something. grin

Bea Wed 31-Aug-16 23:25:01

Don't watch Jessica Jones on Netflix then! That's as miserable as miserable can be!!...

I love Daredevil!... But again no great joy there either... Especially season 2 sad

Shield I find really annoying! It feels like they're just making it up as they go along! And yes!... They're thwarted at every step!... But I do love Phil!

MrsJayy Wed 31-Aug-16 23:28:41

Watch the Thor films they are hilaraious and really over the top Loki --phwoaaar- is the bestest baddy ever. Agents of Sheild is miserable and too serious. Avengers watch Avengers. Superheroes need a background to give them some substance.

MrsJayy Wed 31-Aug-16 23:31:21

I love X men not a bundle of laughs though funny bits but persecuted mutants might not be your thing

Willow2016 Thu 01-Sep-16 00:10:28

We seemed to have watched all the Iron Man, Hulk and Thor films (again) over the last few weeks, great escapism and some really funny bits.
Loki is fab! (Puny God!)

Kids watched Deadpool on plane back from USA too.

Love X men and Wolverine films too. Have a very active imagination and get drawn right into that world smile (and would have an even more active imagination if I ever met Phil Coulson! tum te tum...sidles off innocently)

Willow2016 Thu 01-Sep-16 00:11:21

Oops missed out the Avengers films on the list.
