to think my kids are strange

Ok, ds 1 and 2 have some amazing toys, we sit down and play with them encourage ect but all the want to play with is........cables, switches, plugs, remote controls and such like.

When ds1 started doing it we were like, oh well he's unique but then ds2 does these things and ds1 has started back up with these quirks.

Is it just my kids that are strange?

please note this is lighthearted

Not just your kids. My twins (10 months) would rather play with their big brother's (4.9) toys than theirs, and a remote control or a mobile phone is the BEST. Twin boy will race across the floor for a tablet or phone.

You might have a couple of budding engineers there!

We went all the way to Tunisia when DS was a toddler. When he could be persuaded out the only thing he was interested in was hose pipes!

Twin boy's favourite toy is quite often a coat hanger, though. Totally strange.

What about the boxes the toys come in. don't they play with them too?

Hahaha, thank god it's not just mine then. Grin

Ds1 often takes random stuff into nursery, like a usb cable or and adapter of some sort.

ha ha normal. my little nephews was fascinated by newspapers and those freebie thin paper magazines when he was about 10 months old, liked to crinkle and crunch them up, turn the pages etc. SIL was constantly trying to force a 'real' toy onto him Hmm Grin

I got some new clothes for twin girl on eBay, they arrived yesterday - pulling the clothes out of the box was the most fun those two had had all day, I think

When my ds was 2 he absolutely insisted i buy him a plastic toilet plunger one day when we were in The Range. He loved that plunger.

Not strange at all...

My daughter's favourite thing to do at 12 months was pull all the washing out the basket, get in the basket for a while then put the washing back. There was never any point in folding it, she used get the rage if you didn't let her play with it. Could of saved my-self a fortune in toddler toys.

Our tiny house is packed with toys, but none are as interesting as the dog's food bowls or the contents of the fridge Confused

OP, next time you've any white goods or electricals (from vacuum cleaners through to laptops) for disposal or recycling.....maybe try sitting down with DCs, safety goggles, pliers and a screwdriver to take is all apart with them.

My DS loves seeing how everything fits together and gets to keep all the microchips, cables, bendy bits afterwards as new toys.

My brother was interested in nothing but tractors for two years solid.

office yes, my ds's are very logical and love watching/working out how things operate.

Maybe they will be into macarno? (I don't think that's the correct spelling?!?)

No not just yours. My living room is over run with toys but my DD would rather play with an empty loo roll as a telescope, the lid from the washing detergent becomes a boat, food bag clips become something else... Shows a good imagination I think! Smile

Ours have loads of toys but their favourite activity at the moment is "washing up" - I fill the paddling pool with hot soapy water and give them a few non-breakables and a cloth each and they'll play for ages

Other activities have included watching on a loop a 30-second video of my friend "oinking" at her baby who is giggling... Oh and hitting each other with rolled up magazines

Dd the same. She was my 4 th so really spoiled her with toys. Nothing. Sometimes she may look at them then goes right back to the pots and pans in the cupboard.

You put a 2 week old hoover out for recycling? Confused

Our most used toy is a 2014 bamboo wall calendar free from our Chinese takeaway.

Both DSs (2 & 7) use it variously as pirate map, magic carpet, Telescope, ancient scrolls, costume, weapon and door for a den.

They have shitloads of ACTUAL toys.

Lapinlapin · 27/08/2016 08:29

book I think she means the cardboard box it came in, not the hoover!

RitchyBestingFace · 27/08/2016 08:30

They also use it as a Chinese Calendar - working out who is a Rat, Pig etc

Maybe no.2 is copying no.1?

How old are they? Meccano is suitable for around age 5 upwards.

DS was like this as a baby/toddler. He would play with all the remotes and cables, and everyday stuff in the house. I set aside a kitchen cupboard and filled it with old tupperware and lids, pans, wooden spoons, old cables etc. He would go and open it and pull all the stuff out and play with it, and look SO pleased with himself :) I think it's partly the satisfaction of getting their hands on something that they think is not for them. I'm sure every time he thought he'd outwitted me and made it into the Forbidden Cupboard.

He's now a preteen and very inventive/techie.

I was going to say you need a busy board!
DS2 isn't interested at all in his plastic tat toys, he loves door handles/zips/locks/fasteners
We're in the process of making him a busy board and he is utterly fascinated by it
