AIBU?

...to think that Christmas shouldn't take over a third of the year?

WiIdfire · 26/08/2016 23:08

So it's started already. Christmas threads outside of the Christmas topic. 'What have you bought for Christmas?' discussions in three differ Facebook groups I'm in. Supermarkets starting to stock chocolate santas. In August. AUGUST!?!

If you are the sort of person who buys gifts throughout the year, to spread the cost and use for birthdays and Christmas, that's fine. But I think it is totally unreasonable to say 'it's August, must start Christmas shopping!', am I wrong? I'm not even Humbug about it, I enjoy the festival itself, but does it have to start so flipping early???

So, am I just grouchy, and need to leave the Internet for the next three months, or is anyone with me?

(And yes, I appreciate the irony that I have now started a Christmas thread. In August. But it was giving me the rage.)

I agree op

I refuse to 'engage' with the nonsense til around the 20th of Dec

Ridiculous that it starts earlier but I expect you'll get the usual indulging posters tell you it's sooooo magical

No. It's cheap tacky and a big let down for most kids

I love Christmas and I love planning it but not yet ffs. We've got my favourite season of autumn to get through first.

Bonfire night, crispy autumn walks, mist, getting to wear boots and chunky jumpers before bloody Christmas. No one lives in the moment anymore.

Nope! Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In that order!

Definitely not unreasonable! I'm eyeing up the back to school stationary (oooh, pens!) Then it's my birthday in September, then Halloween, then Bonfire Night and then it's Christmas. (And after that everyone is miserable, because it's January and it sucks.) My MIL watches the crafty shopping channels religiously and they've had Christmas stuff since about May! I want to ban all mention of Christmas till at least the 1st of December. (But I do like the make up gift sets in Boots, which I tend to buy in the sales.)

Meh. I'll have a newborn by November so getting ahead this year. Normally I shop only in November for it.
Don't really get the "spread the cost" logic as you can just use a savings account but it's handy to be able to search out good deals in advance.

Xmas Grin Xmas Wink Xmas Grin

I'll just quietly potter through life (posting on The Christmas Threads throughout the year on MN but IRL, I keep it quiet (er)

But I defend the right to bristle at those who spout that:

I hate Hallowe'en, it should be banned. People are scared to go to the door and IT'S ALL AMERICAN Hmm

I hate Guy Fawkes, it goes on too long, it's scary. You get firweorks for 2 weeks (Yes, it;s Diwali too don't forget)

I hate Christmas, It's too commercialised

I hate the Haters.
If you don't like it, ignore it. No-one makes you take part. I love it all, Autumn, Hallowe'en, Christmas. Love it.

Can you tell I work with the public Xmas Wink

So..... you've posted in AIBU (instead of the Christmas section) to complain about people posting in AIBU (instead of the Christmas section).

Uh huh.

Think about that for a minute. Hmm

YANBU I love Christmas but it seems to get earlier and earlier every year! Went in Tesco the other day and opposite all the back to school stationary were big displays of heros/celebrations etc with winter scenes on!

Too early imo - Autumn is my favourite time of the year with the crisp days, beautiful colours and bonfire plus mine and ds birthdays Smile

I'm also loving the back to school stationary (I'm a teacher and I love stationary!) so I don't want that to disappear off the shelves yet!

It doesn't bother me, just because it's there doesnt mean people have to buy. Some like to buy earlier, others like the time to choose the best present, others grab any old tat close to the day itself.

It's only cheap and tacky if that's how you shop, lots don't buy tat. The date they buy it makes no difference to that.

I love Christmas and am looking forward to it. I also look forward to summer festivals and start thinking and planning for them around March. Looking forward to and planning a future event does not mean wasting the here and now. They aren't mutually exclusive. And your tacky, let down of a Christmas bears no resemblance to ours.

I manage to ignore 75% of the supermarket's offerings and scroll past fb posts I have no interest in. No rage.
