AIBU?

Aibu to be pissed off that she is watching me?

Bachground:

I have worked for my company for 4 years so i know the procedures rules.
We are public facing so have cctv in the public part and 2 staff must be present at all times. The cctv covers nearly everywhere apart from 1 corner where the store cupboard, bin and stationary is kept ( the public never access this part but even if you are in that area you are still classed as on the shop floor as it is open/not blocked off).
A co worker has the cctv facing her desk as she is generally there all the time but she is not my line manager or supervisor.
Over the last 8 months there has been 6 incidents where i have not been at my desk for a few seconds to a few minutes and she has telephoned my co worker, lets call him Ben ( he works on the shop floor with me) to ask where i am.
I am aware the cctv is there for our safety but it feels more like she is watching my every move rather than making sure we are not being murdered. If i was in trouble Ben would not be sat at his desk all relaxed which she can clearly see on the cctv.

She has even questioned my whereabouts when the shop was closed to the public Hmm
I recently brought this up in my supervision and my supervisor who has heard 2 phone calls to Ben agreed it was a little off. I said 1 more incident and i will make a formal complaint.
So heres the AIBU.
AIBU to make the formal complaint or should i just ignore it and keep the office peace (we are a very small team) ?

If Ben isn't there does she call you?

Is she trying to make you look bad?

Where where you?

If she is not your supervisor and it's not her job to ensure there are two people at he desk at all times, then she needs to keep her beak out.

She can't have enough to do if she is glued to the CCTV all the time.

Supervisor is lively but hates confrontation Hmm so always tries to find the nicest solution.

I was 8 ft away from ben. I could see him from where i was stood. The space where i was is lime an L shape with no door so not in public view but i can see bens desk and most of the shop floor.

If Ben isn't there does she call you?

Not once.
He was away from his desk for 20 minutes that same day and not once did she ring ne to ask his whereabouts.

I'd make the complaint. Does she appear to have a problem with you generally?

Make the complaint. If your supervisor doesn't have the wontons, it's up to you.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 20/08/2016 17:31

In that case it's personal. I'd explain that to your supervisor and tell her that while you'd rather not make a formal complaint, you'll have to if she doesn't resolve the problem.

J0kersSmile · 20/08/2016 17:35

Have you asked her why she does this?

I'd say, very politely, why do you feel the need to check up where I am but you don't feel the same need to do so with Ben. I'm going to be honest but it's really irritating, it's not part of your job to check up on me.

Then according to her response I'd either be happy that she wouldn't do so again or I'd tell her I've spoken to the manager and if it happens again I will make my complaint formal.

If she doesn't check up on Ben then it is personal. She either doesn't like you/is jealous of you/wants you gone/wants your job/fancies Ben.

Is it her job to watch the cctv or is she just a nosey mare?

I dont want to confront her as i know i will lose my shit. I am trying to be proffessional as possible but it is making me paranoid Sad

From a safety aspect and because she is always at her desk yes.
However we are not tide to our dedks and we use the whole shop floor to deal with the public plus if i have fucked off for a 20 minute fag break ( i never do my breaks are at set times) its not her business.
We even have to ask people to cover so we can pee Blush

Make a complaint.

Does this mean you can't even go for a pee without her being on the phone to your co-worker? (Or do you need to get cover for personal needs breaks?)

Anyway - if she's red-hot on your "disappearances", but doesn't question Ben's, she's being vindictive. How can you possibly do your job knowing that this woman is watching your every move and just waiting for ny minor infringement (or possible infringement) of policy? And if she's spending all of this time glued to the screen, spying on you, how much of her own job is she doing? I would have thought that she would only be able to give a casual glance at the screen every now and then, not be able to pick up every time you go for a wee, get some stationary or throw away a toffee wrapper. She has to be neglecting her own job when she's making sure you do yours.

you need to speak to your supervisor, if she can't woman up to the matter perhaps she's in the wrong job, it needs to be made her business and for her to deal with it.

TaterTots · 20/08/2016 17:49

That's why you should make it official. That way you can stick to the facts rather than getting angry at her.

Report
TaterTots · 20/08/2016 17:56

Also, as someone who once had to sack someone, I'll tell you your ace card is that she isn't doing this to Ben. I couldn't use poor punctuality against my (useless) team member as I'd let someone else come in late a couple of times. You have to be shown to apply the rules fairly and consistently.

Yes. Wee breaks have to be requested and we have to wait for somebody to come down and cover.......whole other thread on that one Wink

Not to drip feed but the office gossip is she wants a job in this area. I returned to work after 6 months off with mh issues so now i cannot decide if i am paranoid or she is actually focusing on me as she wants my job Shock

Don't loose your shit. Next time proffesrionally and calmly email both the superior and her. State that this is the third time you have been quizzed about your whereabouts when you were on the shop floor and you would like to complain about being singled out when others are not.

If you are female (guessing from your user name) you can also raise with your complaint that this is either personally vindictive or sex discrimination as she never checks up on Ben and what are your line manager going to do to resolve this.

Put the ball firmly in your manager/HR court.

Thank you all.

You are right i need to stop being soft.

She clearly has a problem with me and it is not being solved at management level. I need to go the next step up.
I was worried i was paranoid but actually she is being a bitt odd.

Have you ever said to her "Oh Ben said you were asking after me, did you want something?". If so, how did she reply?
