AIBU?

To think this is really shitty of him?

I have a friend who has a friend, lets call him X.

X has a trade eg; plumber.

Friend has an issue that X knows how to fix and she has bought parts and paid X to do a job for her, not through a business just as a job between friends. She really needs said issue fixed asap and X knew that she needed it done in a hurry.

She paid X to do the job about 2 weeks ago and he has still not done it. Every time she contacts him to do this job he makes excuses, he's too tired, he doesn't have the time, he needs someone else to help him do it etc etc. X has started to just not respond to communication from her and she is getting really upset because she needs this issue fixed quickly and she now can't afford to pay anyone else to do it.

Aibu to think this is really shitty of him? He's been paid to do a job and he should bloody do it! Or at least give her her money back so she can get someone else to do it! Apparently there was a vague attempt to get it done once but it wasn't done properly and so now it needs to be completely re done - X is claiming that he has basically done his part and is reluctant to do it again but since it is his fault it wasn't done right in the first place AIBU to think he should put it right at no extra cost to her?

Wait just seen he's a friend of a friend, not a mutual friend.

It does sound like he's being a shit, but why did she pay upfront and why does he think he has done his part? It could be that he actually has and the work involved is bigger than expected. It depends on the actual job and whether the agreed cost was to fix or look into.

It was agreed (and paid for) that he fix said issue. There was a part that needed replacing, which he did but he neglected to check that other parts were working correctly when he did it. It now turns out that another part needs replacing so he will have to take out the one he replaced, fit the new one, then put the other one back. Along those lines!

I think she paid upfront because she trusted that he would get it done asap and to pay for parts :(

Well... you have specifically said this was as a "friend" not as a business.

If I paid a friend to come and, oh I dunno, change a washer because my tap was dripping, and they came and changed the washer for me, but my tap was still dripping because actually it wasn't the washer that needed changing it was something else... then no, I wouldn't expect said friend to come back and change the tap or whatever as well. I paid him to change a washer, he has changed a washer.

On the other hand, if it was a formal business transaction IO would have expected him to change the washer, discover the tap needed doing too, change the tap and then charge me for all the work he had done. Which would obviously be costlier than it was originally envisaged when he thought it was probably just the washer.

So basically your friend paid him to do part A, it has now been discovered there is a part B to be done too. He hasn't been paid for that, doesn't really have time to take it on, and is being nagged about it...

She should get onto the Inland Revenue and tip them off that he is doing guvvie jobs that he isn't declaring for tax purposes. And if he is claiming any benefits, dob him in for that, too.

I disagree with PP. He sounds exactly like every boiler repair man I have ever dealt with - they come and look, say I need a new thermostat/valve and it'll cost £85, come and replace the broken thing and the boiler still doesn't work. So they come & have another look, identify another broken part and that's £130. This is so inevitable, I taught myself to diagnose boiler issues!

It's really shitty to do this to a friend.

Having agreed that he's not a friend to your friend - just another chancer with a qualification - there's not much she can do about it. She should get another repair person in, on a professional basis, and do everything possible to ensure this one diagnoses the correct problem.

Wishing her luck & better friends!
