Castor, as in the boy's name.

My friend thinks it's pronounced like CasTOR

I think it's pronounced like CastER and that Caster, castor and Kaster are homophones.

I'm happy to be told I'm wrong and am being unreasonable but it's boggling my brain.

I'm having a baby in a couple of days had girls names sorted because that's what I was expecting turns out its a boy and Castor is on a very small short list

Castor= caster to me

QuackDuckQuack Sun 14-Aug-16 15:45:39

If it's going to bother you then pick a more mainstream name as your friend won't be the last to pronounce it differently.

Would be castor to me.OR.

Risks being called caster oil as a nickname though. Or something stools/ diahorrea based.

springwaters Sun 14-Aug-16 15:50:02

Castor oil.

omri Sun 14-Aug-16 15:51:58

I'd pronounce like caster sugar

Missgraeme Sun 14-Aug-16 15:52:19

Expect the Castor Troy gags.
We have a Cyrus and he gets Cyrus the Virus.
Live both names tho!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Sun 14-Aug-16 15:53:27

OR to me.

SilverDragonfly1 Sun 14-Aug-16 15:53:50

CastER. Castor oil is CastOR though (depending on region!) so how it's pronounced generally might depend on where you live. However, Castor Troy in Face/Off is def CastER.

SilverDragonfly1 Sun 14-Aug-16 15:54:37

Sorry, here Castor oil is CaRstor!

FrazzleRock Sun 14-Aug-16 15:57:23

Its a NAME!?
Ok....

Then I'd probably automatically read it as CAS-ter to rhyme with CAS-per.

NeedsAsockamnesty Sun 14-Aug-16 15:57:24

I know 4 Castors who all pronounce it castER, who or what is Caster Troy?

YouTheCat Sun 14-Aug-16 15:58:46

What other names are on your list?

NeedsAsockamnesty Sun 14-Aug-16 15:58:55

Yes frazzle it's a name www.mythencyclopedia.com/Ca-Cr/Castor-and-Pollux.html

KoalaDownUnder Sun 14-Aug-16 15:59:19

OP, these threads are generally pointless as people are not very good at explaining in writing how they pronounce things.

Be prepared to be very confused. grin

NeedsAsockamnesty Sun 14-Aug-16 16:02:53

theCat

So far

Jasper
Castor
Fergus

NeedsAsockamnesty Sun 14-Aug-16 16:03:53

I'm already confused, I found my socks in my handbag earlier!

Buzzardbird Sun 14-Aug-16 16:05:51

I read it as Caster but now I look at it, I would pronounce it as Castor Oil. I have never heard of a human with this name before though.

KoalaDownUnder Sun 14-Aug-16 16:06:03

I love Jasper.

Castor makes me picture a castor on the bottom of a wheely chair. Or caster sugar.

YouTheCat Sun 14-Aug-16 16:07:30

I know a Jasper or two.

Fergus is nicer, I think. It depends on how it goes with surnames/middle names I suppose.

I don't know any Castors but I'd pronounce it with the 'or' rather than 'er'.

PolterGoose Sun 14-Aug-16 16:09:04

Castor would be like Jasper - Cas-tuh

Caster sugar is cars-tuh

Nobodysproblem Sun 14-Aug-16 16:11:33

Think it's one of the names on orphan black (Netflix thing!) and it's pronounced cas-tor (ie not like the sugar..) on there!

KoalaDownUnder Sun 14-Aug-16 16:13:31

Oh, so it's with a short 'a' sound then? As in 'cat'?

Honestly, I think you'll get constant mispronunciations, if that bothers you. 'Castor' looks like 'CAH-stuh' to me.

TeenAndTween Sun 14-Aug-16 16:13:53

I would pronounce it like your friend.
I think your other two choices are better as only one way to say them.

NeedACleverNN Sun 14-Aug-16 16:16:35

I prefer Jasper over Castor but it is your choice
