AIBU?

To think I shouldn't have to put up with this at work?

There's a group of young teen boys who come into the place I work. They're all about 12-14 and they're horrible. In the last week, I've been called a fat cunt, had a spitball blown in my face, been told to fuck off by them and more. They always leave a huge mess behind them- last night, it was sauce smeared all over the table/window/wall, paper torn and thrown everywhere and food all over. They'd also put a balloon down the loo and flooded the disabled loo.

Work have done very little about it. They get kicked out only if I complain to a manager (they came in when I was on my break the other day and trashed the place- it took me nearly an hour to tidy up the mess they'd caused which meant I ended up working over to get everything done.)

I'm so fed up of dealing with them. I've had enough of the abuse, the being made uncomfortable by them (hard to describe- I'm on edge all of the time they're in because of past trouble). I'm sick of the mess they make.

I think they should be barred, but none of the managers agree (they don't see the full scope of what's going on because they don't work on dining area). AIBU to expect more support/protection at work?

Blimey, where do you work? You should call the police as soon as they insult you. Isn't there anyone else in the room with you at the time?

Assuming you work in a community or youth setting your employer should have some kind if rules and exclusions in place. You absolutely shouldn't have to put up with this.

spitting etc is assault i'd complain to the police esp. as your managers seem as useful as the soggy tissues to you clear up. if the management aren't seeing this, i'd take photos of the resulting mess and show them [ not the little shites though obviously].

As they are being abusive verbally and physically I would expect something to be done about it. At the very least your manager should be supervising them as soon as they enter the premises and if they get out of order they should be told to leave and if they don't comply the police should be phoned.

Why do your managers not agree they should be barred when they have been abusive verbally and physically?

Refuse to deal with them or their mess.

I'm thinking (maybe wrongly) that you work in McDonald's, and these little knobheads are coming in and destroying the place. Keep a diary of everything said/done to you.

Why don't you throw them out?

Your bosses are idiots, really. If boys like this can get away with behaving like that then others will come there, too, and behave in an even worse manner. It needs to be nipped in the bud.

You work in a cafe like Mcadonalds don't you?

It's assault and anti social behaviour. I'd call the police every time they came in if I were you. And have you got cctv?

derelict why should op have to do this ? op has already been assaulted/verbally abused what about zero tolerance to abuse of staff ? managers are hardly being supportive to op

QuestionableMouse · 13/08/2016 13:04

Yes, it's a fast food restaurant. The managers basically don't give a shit and can't seem to grasp that even if the kids have been kicked out, there's still all of the mess to clean up.

Yeah I can just see the little pricks leaving nicely when OP "throws them out" Hmm how can she throw them out? They've already assaulted her, there is one of her and a group of them. They would laugh in her face and possibly assault her again!

They need a police escort and asbos!

are you member of a union ? i'd be speaking to that too if i was you as well as police, possibly district manager and higher if managers are too scared to deal with this shite, hate to think what the parents are like, or may be they don't know what their little snow flakes get up to. now that would be interesting esp. if police are involved. whatever happens don't let management brush it under the carpet [excuse pun] Flowers i feel so sorry for you, i really do.

I think you should remind your managers that they have a legal duty to do all they reasonably . can to keep you safe at work. Tell them that if it happens again you will be calling the police, and "retreating to a place of safety" such as a staff break area/loo. You have a legal right to do this.

Once they realise you are serious maybe they will ban the little shits? At least you won't have to deal with them anyway.

Can you take a photo of the mess once they have gone to show your managers?

Last time I was in McDonald's there were a group of teenagers who were throwing food, jumping on the tables and fighting.
What annoyed me most was they continued to get served. I complained, the manager then phoned me later to ask if I could be a witness for the police, but couldn't see how unreasonable they were by continuing to serve them.
You have my sympathy op, your managers are crap.

"Why don't you just throw them out".
If only it were that simple. Hmm
You're right op. You absolutely do not and should not have to put up with it. That is abuse contributed as well by your place of work by not doing anything about the abuse. They have a duty of care to their employees and they are seriously failing to provide that care.
I'd be calling the police, ACAS and seeing about getting them done for constructive dismissal.

Take photos of the mess left. Tell manager you expect extra pay for extra time spent cleaning up. Presumably you're fully occupied during your shift so extra cleaning means overtime.
If other patrons appear at all worried, upset then call the police and tell manager you had no choice because customers intimidated.
Spitting in your face is an assault. Once police have caught up with this gang it's unlikely they'll come back but seek some other establishment to annoy.
PS any customers you know well could be asked confidentially to complain to manager about fact that they are disturbed and considering not returning as it happens on a regular basis

I feel sorry for you OP, what a horrible situation. I'm really surprised your managers are being so unhelpful. I used to work in McDonald's and we had problems with kids like this. Difference is the managers were on it immediately and called the police. I really think if it happens again you should call the police yourself. You have an absolute right to do your job without being abused Angry

I've taken photos- the store manager basically wasn't interested and said they proved nothing. They don't seem to understand what it's actually like.

As for throwing them out- most of them are taller/bigger than me, there's normally a gang of 9/10 of them and they're aggressive. I'll happily deal with angry/drunk people, but a gang of teens? No.

please op do not put up with this, there is some good advice for you on here and anyone else in your situation,

Take it further OP, you shouldn't have to put up with this and neither should the other customers. A well known fast food place near me recently had to impose a blanket ban on groups of teenagers going in as they were running riot on a daily basis, but this only happened because the managers stepped up.

Is there a regional manager you can contact if the branch manager is refusing to deal with it. I agree with happy they have a duty of care to their staff and they are failing in that duty.

Report
mrsfuzzy · 13/08/2016 13:28

your managers are complete tossers then if they refuse to see the problems, i'd go to staff room and call the police if i was you.
