To ignore "friend"

I have a friend over this morning and when making us both a cup of coffee she saw our meal plan pinned to the fridge.
Today we have banana pancakes topped with peanut butter and apple for breakfast. Lunch is pasta and simple tomato sauce. Yoghurt for pudding. Dinner is Lentil soup and bread and butter. Ice cream and pineapple for pudding. Anyway she looked at it and said she would never feed her daughter that amount of carbs or junk in a day.
It's actually quite a good food day for my DS (3). Am I right in thinking it's not that bad really?

Sounds a bit fatty to me, where's the protein?

Sounds yum! That's so judgmental from her, what does her dd eat when she's with you?

Report

Protein is in lentils, banana and peanut butter!

Fatty?? Where's the fat? Peanut butter is good fat as long as it's limited amounts. Then there's a bit of dairy fats in the ice cream and butter but not an unhealthy amount.

I agree that there's a lack of protein but I think she's being a bit of a bitch.

It doesn't sound fatty or unhealthy to me, perhaps a bit carb heavy but children need carbs!

Dutchcourage · 10/08/2016 11:19

That sounds lovely. Ignore her!

Oh good point re lentil protein/

DS is vegetarian so protein in lentils in the soup, egg in pancake and cheese on pasta.
Her DD eats a super healthy diet to be fair. They believe in a high veg, high fat, low carb diet.

Your menu for the day looks great to me. Seriously, what do people feed their children if that is bad to some?! They need carbs and fat.

Fair enough. I'd never walk into someone's house and judge their meal plan, however written here it doesn't sound very balanced - especially considering the OP said this was a 'good day'. Not in anyway awful though.

Regardless of your menu she as rude to comment. Maybe when u are making dinner she will be polishing her mama halo!

My DS is a carb monster. He wants bread/ potatoes/ pasta/ rice with most meals. I don't really know how to train him out of it
We are trying to feed him relatively healthily on a very limited budget at the minute. So there is a lot of homemade soups/ lentil dishes/ pasta and baked sweet potatoes on the weekly menu.
I know I'm moaning about my friend here- she also told my DS it was naughty of him to ask for toast- he should only eat at mealtimes- which annoyed me too. But she is a star really. She's playing with both children in the garden while I lie on the sofa feeling rubbish. Morning sickness still going strong at 25 weeks pregnant!

It doesn't matter if you have fried mars bars on the menu 3 times per day; it's none of anyone's bloody business to come in to your home and comment on your meal plan unprompted

It really upset me- pregnancy hormones mostly to blame I'm sure. I just think some people feel the need to show off about what great parents they are and don't really realise if they are putting someone else down in the process. I'm doing my best with DS. It isn't perfect but it is my best.

She sounds like my co-workers. Carbs are evil! blah blah blah. Ignore.

I bet she saw your lovely, organised meal plan and was looking at things to pick at to make herself feel better

My super-picky DD's diet is worse than that and GP told me not to worry. I also have a veggie DS. I think you're not doing badly at all with that lot. (I'd include more veg but that's because DD doesn't like fruit.)

Your friend low-carbing might be OK for an adult wanting to lose weight but it's not great for growing kids. Plus you have some good unrefined carbs in there.

Plus you're pregnant and you need carbs too or you'll feel faint.

Carbs are not the devil. We may as a population eat too much refined carbs and sugar but that doesn't mean you should never have pasta, bread or lentils!

I have never ever ever everrrr did a meal plan. You actually make me feel quite inadequate. BlushGrin

That's not fatty! It is carb heavy but that's not a problem. There is no veg though, that's the only thing that stood out to me.

But it's nothing to do with your friend and she is rude to comment.

Veg blitzed in pasta sauce and in soup. DS is a pain about eating them in their natural form.

Agree with Demented - I would have been both impressed and envious of your organisational skills! But I would have told you I was impressed, not pick holes in it to make myself feel better! Jeesh. Anyway, DS and I are coming to yours for meals from now on....

That looks super healthy to me and the sort of thing I would have aspired to as a new mum. She sounds very ignorant, both of children's dietary requirements and of manners.

And there is loads of protein there - the eggs and milk in the pancake, the peanut butter, the pasta (durum wheat is high protein wheat), the lentils, the yoghurt, even the ice cream.

We only have meal plan because it's the only way we can stay on budget for weekly food shop. In a few months when money is less tight we will go back to whatever is in the cupboard style of making dinner.
