We have visitors at the weekend, and will need a shed full of wine. Can anyone recommend where I can buy good wine, that won't cost a fortune? Red or white.

How much do you want to spend and what is the purpose?
To go with food or to have as a drink?

Actually, Co Op Fairlead wines are good and come in at around £4.99/£5.99.

Just to drink. I shop at Aldi, but haven't found a really good wine. I've heard Lidl is good, but don't know any names.

Barefoot is usually on offer for a fiver and is lovely. Aldi have a nice prosecco for under £6. Not sure what other wine is good from aldi but I've never been disappointed with their alcohol.

You can get a nice Italian (white) Soave from Aldi for £3.99. I think similar price in Lidl too.

For a red try a Merlot or Cabinet from Aldi/Lidl.

Lidl Gavi is lovely. And for red, Lidl Cepa Lebrel Rioja went down extremely well the last time I had a party. Not sure of the UK£ prices, but in Ireland the Gavi is €7.50 and the Rioja is €6.50. They do a very decent Prosecco, too.

Barefoot is revolting. It's the only wine I've ever thrown away.

You can't go wrong with most prosecco and its usually around £6. I'd really avoid anything that's three for a tenner or similar because, yuck.

Co op wines are generally good.

South African wine - very good value for money, stuff like Tesco & Sainsbury's own label South African wine.

(We own a wine merchant and DH is like an encyclopaedia when it comes to wine)

Majestic is also very good value if you buy more than 6 bottles - they've got loads of NZ Sauvignon's in at the moment for about 6.99 (you can mix the 6 bottles), they often let you taste too - Majestic are great.

Gallo Summer Red isn't even wine - it's a wine based drink!

Waitrose do 'A good Spanish/Italian/French' red or white - think it's 5.99. I drink it all the time. Actually drinking it now.

Aldi Toro Loco red is lovely

Gallo / Hardys / Barefoot are horrible and will give you a hangover

I'd go for the boxed Pinot Grigio blush or New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from sainsbos - much easier to drink!

azda do some good wine too, woolfe Blas's is often on offer , plenty of choices in the £5-6 bracket and the 3 for £10 are all drinkable and good at the end of an evening when people are less discerning(if you decant into a better empty bottle you'd be surprised how many people believe it's better than it is).
