AIBU?

To still listen to BBC radio 1 in my late forties?

I know I'm definitely not the right demographic but I've listened to radio 1 since I was around 12. It's habit! Tried radio 2 and local stations when I felt like perhaps I should grow up but they're pants! (Sorry R2) So I still put on R1 when I'm working in my kitchen - I work from home so in there a lot! I love it! Love chart music, love Scott Mills, Clara Amfo, Greg James. Kind of feel a bit like I'm doing something taboo though 😈 Anyhoo, anyone else feel naughty because they're "too old" for R1?!

YANBU! I, however, am supposedly the right R1 demographic yet constantly switching over to R2 and R4.

Had a long drive with the kids yesterday morning. They wanted radio 1, and I loved it. Lots of club classics I had forgotten from my youth.

I'm 47 and still do too. Now it's down to Scott Mills, Greg James and Annie Mac. I've defected to Radio X for Chris Moyles. DS is 8 and loves Heart old before his time

Grimmy is still on but I'm not up early enough at moment with hols to listen to him. He's ok but I loved Moyles too! Morning show hasn't been same since :(

I find the chat too inane on R1, and I don't understand a lot of the things they talk about. Give me Ken Bruce any day. Dermot O'Leary on R2 has me pressing for R1 though - soooo dull.

If you can tolerate it, why not?

No!
I confess I don't listen to radio 1 and I don't like the chatter, but I listen to Capital and that has all the 'modern' music and club music on it. Have to put up with ads though. (I'm nearly 50)

If you have DAB or decent broadband CM is on Radio X breakfast

I'm 41 and do sometimes but mostly listen to Radio X now. No DAB in car so still stuck with Radio 1 in there.

What is their demographic, apart from 'youngish'?

I love Grimmy, and Greg James. Was very surprised to discover Grimmy is a brunette. You know when you picture someone and then see them in real life and they're completely different..? Greg James has a beautiful voice. I would marry based on the voice swoons

I know lots of people in their forties who listen to Radio1.

I never listened to it, even in my teens.

Listen to what you like.

I used to love XFM but radio X boot in Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay, Johnny Vaughn and lost me. Listen to absolute radio/ planet rock for the music and R4 for the info and comedy

Does it matter whether you fit their demographic? It's not like you'll get locked up for listening to a "too young" radio station.

Although I never liked Radio 1 much. Too much chatter and not enough music. Local radio or Radio 4 has generally been my choice for years if I want to hear talking on radio. I had one particularly annoying colleague who tried telling me I couldn't listen to Radio 4 as I wasn't old enough for it Hmm

I think the BBC totally let's people in the 30-50 bracket down. R1's shite (sorry Op) and R2 is way too old, sounds of the sixties ffs. Really need a R1.5 covering stuff from my my yooof

I'm in my 40s but I prefer Capital or Kiss
I listen to Radio 4 when we are out of town and I want to hear the news

I think demographic is 15 to 30. I'm only 6 years older than Scott Mills so maybe therein lies their problem, if they see it as one.

Im 32 and mainly listen to R6 at home, love Marie Ann Hobbs, Cerys Matthews & Jarvis Cocker.
Listen to R2 in the car. Although not on weekends.
Can't stand weekend R1 too. Matt Edmunson is shite!

YADNBU! But I think maybe the powers that be at Radio 1 would not be happy, because they do have a target demographic don't they? And if there are too many 40 somethings listening then they are not doing their job! I don't know if that sort of categorisation really works anymore with the internet, the teenagers listen to everything online anyway, and we've all got such easy access to everything so I think everyone's tastes are becoming more varied and less easily categorised.

I like 6 music, Radio 4, Radio 1 and Kisstory. Love Kisstory! (I'm 42)

Gave up on R1 when CM left and they made a point of fully targeting their demographic. Never liked Grimmy. Went to R4 and LBC (I know, I know!) but then Radio X appeared and I'm a happy bunny again!

My friend and I discuss this - we think the best thing about turning 30 was not having to force ourselves to listen to R1 anymore! R4 all the way here!

Report
DisgruntledWife · 08/08/2016 21:15

Never heard of Kisstory?!

Totally agree with you tootsie about the powers that be. Knob ends! A friend asked me not that long ago what station I listen to and when I said R1 he said " ooh, you're down with the kids then" ?! Didn't realise that when I got peri menopausal I should lock myself in attack and shun the modern world!
