AIBU?

to find the Olympics on 2 out 3 BBC TV stations endlessly too much?

I'm no sport fan - bit of football now and again - but 2 out of 3 tv stations feels way too much for me.

Surely one dedicated station would be enough.

I don't watch much BBC stuff anyway.
Sick of all the adverts for their own programmes, all the rip-offs of commercial tv programmes.

I'm quite sure commercial tv would have bid to broadcast the Olympics if there was enough viewer interest.

I'm tired of the BBC only showing what commercial tv is already showing or wants to show - surely the point of the BBC should be to show what the commercial channels won't show.

I dont watch any BBC TV now, but I listen to BBC radio. The wall to wall coverage and incessant adverts for the coverage are really wearing. What is worse is Radio 4 arts programmes sending their people to The Favellas to patronisingly explain what a Favella is. I am frankly surprised The Archers, Any Questions and Gardners Question Time aren't coming from the Favellas.

YABU.

It's once every 4 years and it's a great event which always seems to encourage both community spirit and sport in general.

I like to watch really dull documentaries on BBC4 (yes, I know I'm a boring twat). Anyway, last night BBC4 was offering wall to wall Olympic coverage. The okympics should be consigned to only one channel IMO.

YANBU i wish people who don't watch this stuff could get a rebate on the licence.

I think nowadays when with Freeview, iplayers and online services meaning there is so much more choice about what to watch you are being a little U.

And it is only two weeks every 4 years.

But then I am a massive Olympics fan so may be biased!

It's on either BBc1 or BBC2 not both at one time, though. It's only 2 weeks every four years. I don't like football, but I just put up with the Euros because it's a special event.
I think it also makes sense to capitalise on people's interest in Brazil to make a range of other programmes too.
I think YABU and also deliberately being difficult as its only been one day!

Can we do the same for those of us that don't watch soaps, reality tv, and the other everyday BS that is on the box?

If you don't watch BBC stuff, then why do you care? People who want to watch the sport watch it... What an extremely odd complaint.

Especially as there are not just 3 BBC channels (BBC 1, 2, 4, News 24, CBBC, CBEEBIES) and there are also 8 extra channels purely dedicated to the Olympics, so it's something like 10 out of 14 ...

Ameliablue · 07/08/2016 11:13

There's so many other channels you can watch note, I don't see the problem. Think back to the days of 5 channels only and sport on 3or 4 if them.

my fave programme is not on(fake or fortune) I am sad

Report
evrybuddy · 07/08/2016 12:25

Yep I like Fake or Fortune too ... too much to ask to fit that in?

I'd like to see more books and art programmes - less sport and 'family' entertainment.

I don't have to pay for the other channels so that's why I'm moaning

I'd like less anti-intellectualism on BBC

Oh dear...... I agree with Well Smile
Wanting a rebate because you don't want to watch the Olympics which are four yearly ???? Are you a Dementors? How ridiculous.

The time differencd means that most of the events are happening from about 6pm onwards our time and going on all evening. There is a lot of sport happening, and they want to show it all. I think 4 years ago BBC 3 was used, keeping BBC4 free, but now BBC3 has been scrapped so they've had to use 4 instead.

I don't mind really, it's nice to see sports you don't usually see on television. It is only every 4 years Wink

YANBU.

I hate that BBC4, the BBC's arts and culture channel, is wall to wall sport. There is essentially no arts coverage for the next fortnight unless you pay for Sky Arts (and Sky got rid of one of their two arts channels completely not long ago). And the Olympics/Wimbledon/football are always on BBC1 as well, which arts and culture events practically never are.

People are freaking out over Bake Off being delayed by two weeks, but arts/culture and educational programming is constantly marginalised in this country, despite the massive benefits (both in terms of personal development and the financial benefit to the country). It's good to encourage people's interest in sport, but we live in a totally sport-obsessed country already. Maybe we could spare some space now and then for encouraging an interest in the equally valuable and woefully underfunded and neglected arts and culture field?

The Olympics might be only once every four years but there are big sporting events regularly, and they always take precedence over arts and cultural events. I don't mind sport but there should be more balance.

I can sort of cope with it being wall to wall Olympics - I did expect that, but why should BBC4 which is supposedly the arts channel be taken over by it?

The BBC has enough overspill channels for the Olpympics without excluding all arts coverage yet again for sports.

It bores me senseless - and technically it's every 2 years. UK just doesn't field enough athletes for Winter Olympics for wall to wall coverage

Report
daisypond · 07/08/2016 17:17

Where are the overspill channels? BBC TV has BBC One, Two, Four, Cbeebies, Parliament, News and Alba. I don't see where else Olympics coverage could go. If the Beeb didn't cover the Olympics properly, people would complain about it.

I hate most sports and groan at the thought of football and rugby permanently on TV but I love the Olympics. It's the only time you get to see some other sports on TV. BBC Four arts coverage (normally one of my favourite channels) is still there. It normally only starts at 7pm anyway. They've just shunted it back into the late night, early morning - admittedly not much good if you want to watch it in real time. But you can record it, watch it on catch-up or iPlayer.

It is two weeks every four years. The teams have been training for years. They earn nothing. They are young men and women. They have dreams. That dream is to be at the Olympics Quite frankly if you can't understand why a kid trains and grows and wants that dream and then you get pissed off because River City has been cancelled. Take a look at yourself

The Olympcs is one of the so-called "Crown Jewel" events which means it can only be broadcast by a terrestrial channel. These events have to be freely available to everyone, not just those paying for subscription channels.

I'd far rather it was on the BBC than any of the other three options as it would no doubt be filled with ad breaks every 10 minutes.

Report
Wolpertinger · 07/08/2016 18:19

If you press the red button the BBC has loads of extra channels you can see live Olympics on.

Report
daisypond · 07/08/2016 18:36

I don't think I have the red button service - I've got an ancient TV and only the basic channels! But I get your point - there are some extra channels that some people can see.

I have to put up with the bloody football world cup wallpapering the whole world when it is on. The Euros aren't much better.
I have cheerfully watched the gymnastics all day on the iPlayer, and if I could have watched it all day on BBC1 I would have done that instead.

It'll be over soon, just watch a different channel.

YANBU. Sport on one channel at a time only please, and then not all day. We all know one person can run faster or jump higher or thrown things further than another and we don't all care which it will be.

It's two weeks every four years. I don't watch loads of stuff that's on telly and still find other stuff to watch or other things to do. They wouldn't let it dominate if the ratings were shit.
