Today my dad took my little boy fishing this is a very rare occurrence. He drops in every few weeks for about half an hour .
When he brought my son back he told me he was being a bit of a pain and not listening to him he is 5 yrs old by the way . He then went on to say he caught a crab for him and could not believe it when he cried and tried to run away ! I explained at this point he is scared of lots of things like creepy crawlies etc. He then went on to criticise me saying well it's about time he saw some real life instead of an I pad ????
I felt really angry because yes the very few moments my dad visits he may be on the I pad , drawing playing in his room etc , doesn't mean that this is all my son has going on in his life .
Me and my husband to do as much as possible with him just like any other parents . Every single weekend is based around our son we go for picnics , to the beach, walks, cinema, weekends away , we caravan it have weekends of games crafts lazy days etc . The holidays have been pretty busy as well .
I really felt upset that my father and mother, who showed zero interest and gave me and my brother and sister no time whatsoever in their life's ,never encouraged us to go anywhere ,and may I add did none of these things with us really thinks it's ok to criticise when he doesn't know the full picture. .
I'm convinced that because I don't FB my life and I don't see them that often that they think we just sit in the house . If he phones and we aren't in he moans we are never in !
Have you ever felt like you cannot win with your parents I'm silently seething ? I know this sounds petty in the grand scheme of things I guess it's just made me think maybe I'm not doing enough with my son and I'm starting to doubt my parenting skills!

I suspect your Dad is lashing out because he had in his head that they'd have a wonderful perfect day together and it didn't go that well.

He is wrong to criticise your parenting, of course he is. But his comments aren't about you really.

He's disappointed.

I think a lot of kids that age would be scared of a pinching, small eyed scary fecking crab! Only time I'm not scared of them is if I'm eating one!

My DC's were scared of guinea pigs at that age, let alone a bloody crab!
