AIBU?

Is it normal now to behave in the cinema exactly as you would when watching a film at home?

Went to watch Finding Dory with the DCs today. The parts of the film I could concentrate on were great but the whole thing was spoilt by the amount of people having constant full volume conversations.

I didn't feel I could say anything as it would have meant asking the people both sides of us and behind us to be quiet. Also because the adults were joining in the conversations I would be directly challenging their parenting/child caring methods iyswim. The fact that so many groups were doing it had me doubting myself as well.

I don't mind laughing, children getting generally excited about the experience or whispered conversations at all. When did constant loud questions/answers/comments/getting in and out of your seat become such a normal thing to do at the cinema?

AIBU to stop going to the pictures at all if it just means having to listen to other people's conversations and not being able to concentrate on the film? It seems to happen more when it's busy - we had this problem at Star Wars as well.

I went to see it today.

There wasn't many children but a lot of adults. Only noise was popcorn eating and laughter.

It was amazing.

Last time I paid my dh and me and 3 kids in I had to tell a group of 20year olds to be quiet!! Think they need to bring back the usherettes!!

It seemed to be the last time I went, in particular people necking massive smelly plates of nachos, rustling and crunching huge pick n mixes and swilling drinks like they were sitting on their own sofa.

There are very few things I'd bother seeing at the cinema now tbh, it costs a small fortune to watch a film with a bunch of (mainly) anti-social idiots. I'd rather wait for the DVD/Netflix.

YANBU except I think behaviour is worse at the cinema than at home! I went to see Jason Bourne yesterday and saw

  • loads of people with their feet up on the seats
  • a child getting up and down out of his seat numerous times to go and chat to someone sitting down the front
  • people talking all the way through
  • people leaving all their rubbish behind them including popcorn spilled all over the floor etc.

I may be alone in regard to the last one as pretty much everyone seems to leave their rubbish behind except us Confused

I went with my cousin and her ds at the weekend go see finding dory and the children in the room ( and there was loads) were all behaved once the film actually started. It was just popcorn and laughter noise so was fine.

If a child/adult needs to get out of seat for a wee then fair enough but to keep getting up for no reason would annoy me.

People talking to each other would annoy me too once the films started just wait until after the film

Had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago and thought exactly the same thing. Rude, selfish people with no manners or consideration, thinking they're sat at home yakking and scoffing. You go to the cinema to become engrossed and absorbed, not to be irritated and annoyed.

Went to see BFG today - one woman had her phone on the whole time, it was like a torch shining. Several people asked her to put it away and she did briefly then got it out again. And another mum did loud parenting all through the film, talking about what was happening and encouraging the child to chatter too. Rude.

So it's not just me then. I thought I must have missed when the rules changed and the cinema was no longer a place where you have to be quiet but is now a free for all of talking, walking around and general messing about!

I can understand how a group of 20 year olds would start getting a bit lairy but it's when you're next to a child going 'Mum why is so and so happening?' and instead of replying 'Sshh - watch the film and you'll find out' the mum will start going through all sorts of possibilities at full volume that I start to seethe!

I just thought I was going mad because it seemed like at least half the cinema were behaving this way.

Oh yes and phone brightness too! Just turn it to silent at the start and do without it for 90 minutes! Aargh!!

Exactly what NeonPinkNails said.

Unless the film is really suited to the cinema, I watch it at home. Costs

It infuriates me beyond reason. I used to love going to the cinema - when I was a student I saw nearly every new release - but I now find it a very unpleasant experience. Many people seem to have lost the basics of being in a public place, never mind a public place with specific conventions, such as a cinema or theatre, where consideration for others should be paramount. The endless talking is bad enough but even worse is the revolting stench of food that people seem to think must be shoved into their cake-holes throughout the film, as if they will starve if they have to go without food for a few hours. Then there's the phones, the sauntering in and out, the B.O. and the sub-zero air-conditioning.

I mostly wait and watch films at home these days.

Its the main reason why I no longer go to the cinema.

LOL at loud parenting in the cinema Grin

I mostly only get to kid's films now, so there can be a bit of shuffling and whispering and chomping, but it never seems that bad.

I've gone off the cinema too, we have a great one with an IMAX screen and reasonable seats, but I hate the long intros, advertising, the people who sit too close and eat smelly or noisy food. It's always too cold and going out to the loo when you are in the middle of a row is difficult and embarrassing. Films are too long for me not to need to go and our seating is long rows and those on the end have a crap view. Talking makes my blood boil.

Prices are sky high too, I'd rather wait for it to be released on Sky Store.

I agree the cinema is a nightmare full of rude people who talk, slurp. get up an down, kick the seats in front and spill their crap food all over. I go very rarely as I do not find it enjoyable.

Some of it is the cimema's fault for selling such inappropriate food ffs - nachos?? I'd leave the cinema with half of them down my front if I tried eating nachos in the dark. Totally antisocial and inappropriate.

It pisses me off no end. I don't think it's just cinemas though.
We went to watch a comedian earlier in the year and I had to ask the bloke next to me to turn his phone off, he was on it constantly.
Also saw a band recently and before one song the lead singer spoke for a few minutes. You couldn't hear a word of what he said as most the crowd were just chatting away.
I find it baffling, these things are not cheap. They have paid good money to stand around chatting and pissing about on their phones. No doubt they will be gushing about the amazing time they have had on social media when they could have been anywhere.

I'm surprised cinemas still exist really. Haven't been to one for years, for just the reasons given by OP. People do seem collectively much ruder than that used to. Much better to watch at home - although nowadays I'm not that bothered I can't wait until a film comes on TV ...

I tell people to shut up Blush

I actually don't care, I've spent like £30 to be in there!!

Star wars I actually stood up turned around to the row of late teens behind me (in 26) and said something along the lines of "turn off your phone's, and stop constantly talking/shouting at each other its getting on my nerves and probably others too .and chew quieter"

I had a round of applause. I'm past caring about what others think of me now, fuck it life's to short and money too tight to give a fuck lol

I have cinema membership so go to the cinema a lot (at least once a week). Sometimes it's great but every so often a movie is completely ruined by assholes. I love kids movies despite not having children and often find they are the better ones to go see. Generally children seem to behave pretty well in the cinema round here. It's the arsehole adults in blockbuster movies checking their bloody smartphones, giving a running fucking commentary all the way through ghostbusters, putting feet up on seats or having loud arguments with their partners before storming out that most often ruin it. HmmAngry
I like seeing less popular movies, in the morning if I can, so its just 3 or 4 people all quietly enjoying a Starbucks and a movie.

Try your local independent cinema... Likely to be quieter, cheaper and better behaved!

I wish I'd had the guts to complain a couple of weeks ago. While waiting with my DC for the much awaited Secret Life of Pets to start, the entire cast of The Jeremy Kyle Show turned up with their offspring including very young toddlers. The adults were chatting loudly, texting with bright torch like screens and the babies, clearly too young for the cinema, screamed on and off throughout. I'd welcome the return of ushers too.

I used to love going to the cinema but now I refuse. I can't stand the noisy eaters, the stinking nachos & hotdogs and the phones going off and people chatting. I thought perhaps I was just being grumpy and intolerant in my old age so it's good to see I'm not alone.
