AIBU?

To ask if this is fair?

Moving into a flatshare, two rooms on offer and up to me and flatmate to sort prices. One v big with balcony and nice room; one with en-suite bit equivalent floor space (so smaller bedroom area but still big). Flatmate wants to pay same price for en-suite and I don't really want en-suite so have agreed...

Is this fair?

A bit of me feels like the extra en-suite facilities should be worth more?

If one has a balcony and the other an en suite then I'd say it's fair to be equal

In my opinion that's fair. You've got the bigger room and balcony. That's the one I would prefer too.

Presumably if she has an ensuite you'll have a bathroom to yourself somewhere else in the flat, if anything you've got a better deal.

Seems fair. They both have their attractions. I think I'd prefer the larger room and balcony.

It's fair.

Without balcony I'd say en suite pays more but with balcony vs en suite I'd say equal.

If it's a 2bed and one has an ensuite then really you both have private bathrooms. It just so happens that hers is attached to her bedroom and yours isn't.

If it is a 2 bedroom flat you've got the better deal. The only difference is visitors will use your bathroom but beyond that you've got the larger room and a balcony.

No no it's a 4 bed, so three bedrooms sharing a bathroom that is the same size as en-suite. Balcony is Juliette balcony so just railings and no "step-out" outside access.

En suite should pay more in that case.

Juliet balconies are pointless.

Juliet balconies are a great way to an a zero to the price without adding anything of value pointless.

It seems fair. You didn't want the en-suite which implies you don't see it as an advantage except when it comes to calculating rent. You have a nice, big room with a balcony. They have a smaller room because their floor space includes an en-suite.
Whatever way I look at it, it seems fair. However if you don't think it's fair then regardless of what people say on the internet, you are going to feel disadvantaged and that is not a good way to start a flatshare.

I feel like it's fair if it's equal square footage but others have been telling me it's not as flatmate will have own private, separate bathroom. They also have the only bath in the house. Argh I don't know!!

en suite should pay more if 3 others are sharing the other bathroom! All wanting showers at same time in the morning. hairs and pubes stuck in the shower drain.... stinky poo, etc etc. I'd so want the en suite and would be happy to pay more for it.

Make sure if one of you has two spoons of sugar in your tea, and the other has one, that the cost is split accordingly.

I couldn't get worked up about this.

You've got the bigger room - so it's fair imo

That's a bit unfair arethereanyleft Confused I'm not a mean or stingy person at all - if i was surely I would have insisted flatmate paid the higher price?! There's nothing I can do now anyway and I'm not one to cause a fuss about money - just wondering what you would all do. As you can see there has been a difference of opinions!

Why has it been left up to you and your mate to decide? Surely the cost i's x per week for room a and y per week for room b?

It's a house of four and we are taking it as a four. Have agreed on cost of other two but it has been left to is to agree cost of these two.

I think the person with the en suite should pay more than the rest of you who have to share a bathroom.

I kind of think that too - but I don't know how to approach it. I guess as we have agreed I can't fight it?

Ensuite should pay more, especially as you still have to share the other bathroom with 2 others and I agree, juliet balconies are basically just a big window.

Report
YelloDraw · 01/08/2016 14:59

If you're having to share bathroom facilities with 2 others, I think the en suite room should be at a premium.

I wouldn't have said that if this was a new build flat 2 bed 2 bath type arrangment.
