AIBU?

Wrist tattoos with your name...

AIBU to think that having a wrist tattoo with your own name/initials is pretty pointless? Why? Is it incase you forget who you are? Genuinely confused by these. Confused

There is no need to have any tattoos; especially those that cannot be covered up.

beyond your friend was murdered by her boyfriend? Very blase description of her death.

I didn't go into detail as the thread is about tattoos? Is that weird? If so, sorry, I'm a bit crap at getting the right words out. I have spoken about it here in a less blasé way when talking about DV, but I didn't think it was relevant here.

I hope this is a joke - albeit a sick one

While they're not to my taste (i don't see myself forgetting my name anytime soon lol) I can't get worked up about it

Beyond - I know you're probably using humour to deal with your own grief here, and I'm really sorry for your loss. But how do you think your friend's family would feel if they came across your post looking like you are joking about her murder? It must be pretty identifiable too

I have tattoos. But none of anyone's initials.

My wrist tattoo is a small flock of birds.

I worked with a guy once that had his own name tattooed on his back. I knew another with his name on his arm. I took the piss all the time what a stupid thing to have tattooed on you.
Beyond I'm sorry for your loss. Perhaps your comment was a little too blasé when seen by people who haven't read your previous thread about your friend. Or if seen my her family.

Most people I have seen with tattoos on their wrist have other people's names, not their own. Mostly their children.

Point stands though, you're not going to remember your kids names so why have them permanently inked on you. I am really not a fan of tattoos in any way, shape or form.

Why do people have any kind of tattoo? The answer is very simple.... Because they want to. There doesn't need to be a point to it and no explanation is ever necessary. Their body, their choice.

I think some tattoos look amazing and others look awful. However, it is individual choice.

Why does it bother you what someone else decides to put on their skin?

My OH has his own name tattooed up his forearm, got it done when a lot younger and in an environment where it was the done thing (military) to get a tattoo and couldn't think what else to get, bless him. Helped us get together as I gave him a good slagging off for it when I first met him which he quite liked. Don't think he regrets it as such, the tattoo was done at a time that was significant to mark, the choice of word wasn't really relevant. I put years of thought into my tattoos, however.

Maybe they like their name? Maybe they know someone else with the same name - an older relative perhaps? They could have paid tribute to other people/their children/family members on other parts of their body and thought that they deserved a mention too? Perhaps they wanted to label themselves as they would any other possession - in other words, this is my body, it belongs to me and what happens to it is up to me? Maybe they just thought, "Fuck it, I want a tattoo but I'm not sure what to get so I'll just get my own name in nice, fancy letters," and because it's their body it's their choice?

The ones I don't understand, are back tattoos. Ok well I get its a bigger flatter area for the tattoo. But you'll never see it the right way round.

A friend has a tattoo all the way down her spine. But has only ever seen it in a mirror.

I don't get that. Why spend all that money on something you're not going to be able to enjoy?
But their body their rules.

People have said to me that I should cover up my wrist-birds (3 swallows) because it'll damage my career. doubtful

Beyond, your post is not how a lot of people would refer to their friend's murder but the shocking part is that she was murdered, not this post. It might be identifiable though (2 women a week murdered on average on the uk by partner or ex so maybe not that identifiable, unfortunately)
What I'm trying to say is that is the sort of way I might post on a thread about tattoos if I was, God forbid, in similar circs. So I understand that it doesn't mean you don't care, it's just delivery/black humour/what's the point in dressing up such a terrible, stark thing to have happened. Sorry to go on but just thought you were getting a hard time.
I don't like any wrist tattoos at all btw.

PotteringAlong well said. I don't like tats and am trying to discourage my teen DDs from having the when the are older.

I worry that in 20 years time the 'names' will be indicipherable, because everyones tattoos will have become a greeny splodge and there will be an epidemic of everyone having them removed.

Scarydinosaurs · 31/07/2016 09:04

beyond it wasn't the brevity, it was the nonchalance. It must have been devastating for her family if the only way they could identify her was from her tattoo. How absolutely dreadful.

Report
AndroidAddict · 31/07/2016 09:17

perfect my dad had tattoos over 40 years ago, on his wrists, and they're still bright, clear and colourful. They don't appear to have faded at all and are certainly not indecipherable green splodges.
If you don't like tattoos then that's your call, but why put off your dds from getting them as adults? After all, they'll be adults and their bodies will be their own.

I disagree. I felt bitterness in that comment.

I have my husbands name on my wrist and he has mine. We did tattoos instead of rings as I can't wear my rings due to my job.

Report
FairyDogMother11 · 31/07/2016 09:24

Some people get them if they're in the military. It's so they're easily identified should the worst happen, I know someone who has his name on his back. But other than that I see no reason why you'd do it!
