Just want a second opinion here. There is no drama, no outrage, no tragedy. We will not be complaining or anything. Yes, it is a first world issue.

We have just arrived at our holiday cottage. It is in the middle of a National Park, first week of the school hols, so not particularly cheap.

Which of these items would you expect to find in your cottage?

1. A few Tea bags
2. Pint of milk
3. Toilet roll
3. Guest soap
4. Washing up liquid/few dishwasher tablets
5. WiFi

If you can be bothered please tell me the order of likelihood that you might expect these in. I'm curious to know whether my reaction on arrival was reasonable or not...

Just loo rolls

JimmyGreavesMoustache Sat 30-Jul-16 20:32:03

i would expect loo roll and hand soap
nothing else unless expressly mentioned.

Nanunanu Sat 30-Jul-16 20:32:13

None of the rest. Although a few places will have them. Loads of places we have stayed don't. So now we have a box of stuff we take on weekends away and order look roll with the food delivery.

OTheHugeManatee Sat 30-Jul-16 20:32:33

I would expect loo roll and be pleased by the rest, but not expect them unless it was a higher-end let.

ALLthedinosaurs Sat 30-Jul-16 20:32:34

Toilet roll

Don't really care about the rest

StuffandBother Sat 30-Jul-16 20:32:33

I'd expect all of those

StillStayingClassySanDiego Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:04

I'd expect the majority of them to be honest.

We've had holiday lets in the UK and apart from the WiFi we've always had those things on arrival.

We just spent a week at a cottage in Cornwall and only had two of your list- Wifi and two half-rolls of toilet roll. I was unimpressed. I wouldn't expect tea bags, milk is a nice thought, but no soap or washing up liquid very poor for £1400-odd for the week which is what we spent.

SellFridges Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:23

Loo rolls. Soap.

Actually, all of them. WiFi maybe the only one I wouldn't expect.

steff13 Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:30

2. Toilet paper
3. Soap
4. Dish soap/dishwasher detergent

MAYBE tea bags, but certainly not milk.

Shylo Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:32

Loo roll and washing up liquid for sure

WiFi I'd have checked when booking and if not stated i'd have assumed they had none

Wouldn't expect tea bags or milk

MothertotheLordsofmisrule Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:38

That all sounds fair enough, wifi is an added bonus and the milk.

Also bits left by previous guests can save having to buy foil, oil, laundry stuff etc.

Bit disappointed that the cottage we were in last week had welcome tray of tea/coffee but no salt or pepper in cupboard. We did leave a decent corkscrew!

Wifi and loo rolls. All else is lovely and makes me like a place more, but not expected.

And I would only expect there to be milk by arrangement.

FuzzyCustard Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:51

I wouldn't necessarily expect any of those things. They are all things I would take with me (well, not Wi-Fi). Cottage details normally tell you what's included.

annandale Sat 30-Jul-16 20:33:59

Agree, loo rolls.

The place we're staying has all of that but PILs paid a lot for it blush

That1950sMum Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:15

Definitely loo roll.

The other things would be nice, but I wouldn't expect them.

Orchidflower1 Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:21

If I'd booked through a company I'd expect loo roll and soap and probably wifi depending on where u are eg up a mountain in Wales maybe not! Roughly that order too. If I'd booked directly with owner prob a little bit more.

twinjocks Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:31

I would expect toilet roll.
I would have checked in advance if there was WiFi (very important with teenagers!).
The other things - I would hope there would be guest soap and I would be pleased to see teabags/milk/dishwasher tabs but I would not expect them.

chough Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:31

Wouldn't expect to find any of those things in a self- catering cottage, but it's very variable.
I just take all those things, then if they are provided it's a bonus.

Having stayed in far too many holiday cottages in France to mention, I would expect loo roll and wifi if it was mentioned on particulars. I would always buy loo roll whilst there though. Guest soap and dishwasher stuff is sometimes there as others have left it and we always leave what we have bought. I would always expect cleaning products though as house has to be left clean.
Often there is a lot there as previous people have left it but there is never an expectation on our part. We do love the houses which have a bottle of wine in he fridge for our arrival though!!
We keep a list of what we need to take each year.
Hope you have a great holiday.

SoftSheen Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:39

All the cottages I have stayed in have had at least one loo roll. The other stuff may or may not be present.

Doilooklikeatourist Sat 30-Jul-16 20:34:50

I'd expect all of those

Rumpelstiltskin143 Sat 30-Jul-16 20:35:03

We rent cottages every summer. Only once have we not had everything on your list and the only thing missing was guest soap.

We have also rented cottages from the Landmark Trust and have been told in advance that they don't have wifi.

AngelBlue12 Sat 30-Jul-16 20:35:21

1. A couple of loo rolls
2. Soap
3. Washing up liquid/few dishwasher tablets
4. A few tea bags

I wouldn't expect milk - too many variations (whole/skim/soya) they'd never be able to pick the right one!

I'd only expect wifi if it was in the advert.
