The media coverage of winning the world cup in the 60's is ridiculous. Radio phone-ins, interviews with people who watched it, books written, news coverage.

If anything it should be embarassing that England hasn't won anything for 50 years.

I know I am b abit u and I don't know why it irks me so much.

Because football fans are so inadequate that they have to cling to anything at all, even if it happened half a century ago?

It's baffling. Maybe it was a very slow news day?

Getting ragey about it is OTT though.

We have a team in a national sport that have won nothing internationally in 50 years. Because our home grown players aren't very good.

Fortunately we are good at other sports. Ignore footy, we are rubbish at it.

Dull as shit isn't it!

It is the stuff of legends, precisely because England have been so dismal in the last 40 years. Very few football fans can imagine England ever winning the cup again. It was a golden time of opportunity for the country, the swinging sixties and everything seemed possible for us as a nation. I can understand why people get nostalgic about it. Winning the world cup is a symbol of all we have lost.

I have been baffled by it since they first started talking about it about 3 months ago... Completely bizarre! Another reason for not loving football WinkGrin and I am going to be studiously avoiding it!

I have to admit to also hating football so it is double annoying.

I love the obsession with 1966 and I'm a) not that into football and b) German.
There's something very British about this celebration.

Well, it seems to give some people a feeling of superiority over football fans for one thing.
I'm not English, so really don't care - but I manage to ignore it without any problem.

We are a house full of huge football fans . This obsession with England winning the WC all those bloody years ago is embarrassing, what's the bloody pointAngry.

Let it go, roll on August when the domestic football's back on.

Love it or loathe it, football (and sport in general) are a valid part of any city/country/area's cultural history. I'm not a massive football fan nowaways but i used to be and will still happily watch any documentary etc on football in england based on 90s and earlier.

Also i think it's nice to remember that final as i like a lot of the character involved (I've not met them but my grandparents spoke highly of stiles and charlton) etc.

I'm Scottish and just find it a bit naff.

If it was won 10 years ago I'd get it but 50? Plus the fact that the current England team is so shite (Scotland team is worse so don't start saying I'm anti English Grin) makes it a bit cringey.

I'm Scottish and just find it a bit naff I'm Scottish too. It's all a bit Jimmy Hill, blazers and jumpers for goal posts.

I like it, it's nostalgic and it's good to look back at a happy time. Football is a massive part of our culture whether you like it or not, I like the way it brings so many people together in a shared interest.

Oh for goodness sake if you don't like it ignore it, I have managed to perfectly well. It's the 50th anniversary so for this year only I personally see nothing wrong with it. By all means slag off the cure and recent teams they deserve it but that team had some fantastic players and they are entitled to be remembered.

I remember my Grandad saying that they didn't make as much of a fuss over England winning the World Cup when it happened as they have done in the years since. Maybe the World Cup wasn't as much of a big deal then, where as now it's probably on a par with the Olympics?

I dont know, I find it cringey as well, and that goal certainly didn't cross the line. The Germans are right to be narked about that being allowed to stand.

Instead of hankering after the past they should start looking at why the England team are such an embrassmnet and have never won anything since?

I wonder if teams that are actually consistently good at football do things like this? Apparently the Germans think the English are very odd about going on about it. No one goes on like this about England wining the rugby World Cup. People seem to sweep under the carpet that's it's actually quite embarrassing not to win a major tournament, of a game you invented, for over 50 years.

It's the people campaigning to give the players who are still alive knighthoods that gets me. Why?!

Runny · 30/07/2016 11:41

Also all of the fuss about Bobby Moore is ridiculous. He didn't score the winning goals, and was quite honestly just as much of a shit as today's footballers are. Cheating on his wife and then trading her in for a younger model. Nice....

minionsrule · 30/07/2016 11:47

Than god its not just me, another footy fan here but seriously, can you imagine the Germans doing this? No because they win it more often - its the only thing we have to cling on to

I find it beyond pathetic. I try and avoid all talk of it but that is impossible. Even on R2 they are talking about some daft concert or other celebrating this minute by minute.

Presented by Jeremy Vine & Louise Minchin the programme will celebrate the remarkable achievements of those involved with the 1966 final, offering an insight into the thoughts and feelings of those affected by the game, both in Wembley Stadium, as well as ordinary people up and down the country

Now that is just plain embarrassing. We should be hanging our heads in shame that we can't manage anything in 50 years, not celebrating it!

Thank god for rugby is all I say. At least we win titles at that game.

Edmund, the first time I've heard about the 1966 win was when I moved to England(But I'm not that much into football).

In Germany the "legendary" game is the 1954 world cup win against Hungary known as "Das Wunder von Bern." (The miracle of Bern.). Documentaries are made about that one but I don't remember a big 50th anniversary thing for months end.

Alconleigh · 30/07/2016 11:56

You are not alone. It's utterly embarrassing. Still, a certain recent vote that shall not be named indicated that a large proportion of England would like to live in the past, so maybe it's all part of the same thing.

Report
limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2016 11:56

Ignore it then. English football fans are well aware of the abject failure of our national side - particularly England's most recent outing. But we live in hope.

And as for this: It's the people campaigning to give the players who are still alive knighthoods that gets me. Why?!

why not? We give knighthoods and damehoods and other awards to other people who have made great achievements in sport. Winning the World Cup is quite a big deal.
