AIBU?

to tell them Youtube is broken

I usually love to let my children do what they want in the holidays.

They are 10 and 7

This year, they are doing sports camps while I'm working (9 to 4 everyday) which is more or less a school day.

Every other spare minute they want to watch chuffing Youtube videos of some numpties playing video games. I would prefer them to play the chuffing things.

They don't want to do anything else. No playing, no reading, no cooking, no drawing, no boardgames ... NOTHING

If I turn it of DS1 immediately moans he's bored.

I wouldn't mind if they were watching a film or something but its just so mindless I'm concerned it's actually rotting their brains.

We are about to go camping for a fortnight and they will have no Wifi.

Should I just leave them to it or insist they do something else.

I'd leave them to it. They're out of the house and away from the screens 9-4, maybe they don't feel like doing anything else. It's not going to rot their brains. I don't quite get the attraction of watching someone playing a game rather than playing it yourself but then again my DS probably wouldn't understand why I enjoy browsing mumsnet for hours in the evening Grin

Telling them Youtube is broken sounds perfect.

I have a 3 year old niece who spends most of the day watching videos about play doh and people making weird things out of it on youtube. I don't get it.

Id rather she played with actual toys too. especially when the iPad is practically glued to her face D:

Would a 10yo really fall for "youtube is broken"?

Report
fruitstick · 26/07/2016 14:18

No - they won't fall for it for a minute!

You could turn the wifi off "ooh the internet seems to be down" but what would you do with them then and how would you Mumsnet?

Mine's currently watching Eyeball Squid pretending to be a sniper Hmm

Is he the one with the Headphones?

I think I'm just jealous that I'm not earning bazillions of pounds from playing on a computer.

Imagine if there was a Mumsnet version!

Do it.

My 3 year old would watch YouTube all day if I let her. She seems obsessed by the videos of a child opening lollies and eating them Confused

Maybe I could persuade them to make their own instead.

I have no idea. He has a beard I think?

I'm hoping the volume of videos will slow down soon. I'm imagining that in real life Squid, Stampy and DanTDM (or whatever his name is) are all out playing Pokemon Go and blinking in the sunlight, their pale bodies unaccustomed to sunlight and they recoil at the sight of actual live, human women as other than their mums they rarely meet them.

We might be lucky and they get lost :)

Be careful if you allow them to make their own videos. We had the mummy getting out of the shower horror film and the documentary This is my sister's bum hole Shock

We have withdrawn the camera and deleted any videos that would have us arrested if they made their way onto the web...

10 year old is bored? Bored gets a job in this house. The room needs tidying, he didn't do so well last year with his times tables, could he pop to the shops for some milk, stack the dishwasher and hang out the towels, please? Watch him rediscover his Lego immediately.

I've already been subjected to DanTeDiuM playing Pokemon go on YouTube. I bought the firestick for ME damn it, not my children.

I get the joy of seeing DanTDM in the flesh on Saturday and have paid for the privilege. I wonder if his laugh is as annoying IRL

Just block YouTube on the browser/s. My ds was convinced YouTube has gone down (as the rest of the Internet worked) and he was happy for it to wait to fix itself. Until he discovered it worked on the other browsers! Don't make the same mistake as me! 😂

They watch YouTube via the Xbox.

They'd clock if i uninstalled it.

Why not just tell them that they're on it too much and the Ipads/phones/laptops whatever are going away for now. Boredom is good for kids - forces them to use their imaginations.

you can usually log into your account with your network provider and block certain webpages. We used to stop skype at night so the 15yo didn't wake up from his friends' moping about being awake..

I never knew you could block youtube. I might do that. I have one obsessed with watching other people play video games and one with people opening up toys and making lipglosses.

Can you no just disconnect the wifi for a couple of hours and say there's a fault. My parents used to do it to me back in the day when you didn't get 1000000GB of internet as standard lol

Did you know that when the Olympics starts CBeebies is going to turn off for the whole Olympics because it's so special?

Amazing isn't it Star

My son is 3 and stupid so that should work fine for me!

I suggest you block you tube as suggested above. A change is as good as a rest they say. Even if just for a couple of weeks Brew
