AIBU?

would I get flamed if I whisper a quiet "thank you" to MN?

I'll find out....

We have a new neighbour (next door but one, but 60's-build terrace, so you can literally hear your neighbours (from houses down the street) changing their minds!

New neighbour doing building work. Understandable. Noisy and annoying, but we remind ourselves it's only in the short term (shame DD not getting to catch up on sleep, which is so important, during summer hols because they're using noisy equipment from 7:30am, but that's what happens when you renovate). At 8:30 we commented to each other that they're working late, and wondered when it would stop.

At 9:40 DD called out she could still hear the hammering from her bedroom. So I told DH I would go (I thought I'd be less intimidating than a man????) and went out, only pausing to put on my MN "Big Girl" pants (TM). I was completely polite, but determined to "tell it to them straight" (all as MN has trained me to be). I said "Hello, I'm Mockery from 3 doors down, and I just wanted to let you know my DD is going to bed now". They said "oh, our child is too!". So I said "will you be doing much more hammering tonight?". They said "it's really nice to meet you, Mockery" and hammers went silent instantly.

Thank you, MN for giving me the confidence to confront, and the tools to do it assertively but politely. (I will, of course, be LTB and going NC and reporting to the school as well. And buying a penguin bollard. And stopping the cheque). But, honestly, it went REALLY well, and I was shaking inside, so thank you! Not even a head tilt or death stare required!

It's a shame my slob-out costume for the eventing consists of a raggedy old jumper I brought in 1994 (no exaggeration), and has more gaps than cotton left on it. Plus, a new exciting addition of daughter's hair dye wiped down the front - a glorious shade of magenta. They def saw all my back and at least one nipple. Heigh ho! (should have listened when DH suggested I don't wear it outside the house, but it's so comfortable!) (no threads I have seen covers this, so MN blameless - the costume failure was mine alone!)

Was flashing your nipple at them an integral part of the plan? Or....? Confused

it might have been both nipples. There is a t-shirt underneath!

Star Excellent, Mockery. Proud of you, I am!

PS: Nipple-flashing can be a useful assertiveness tool, but isn't usually required Wink

Flamed for what, exactly? Confused

Asking your neighbour not to bang?

Is there even an AIBU in the OP?

Goodness this post is a bit cringe op. You really felt you did something great by telling hour neighbour to stop banging at an unreasonable hour? Confused

What's with all the MN cliches too?

Well done to you! Very tricky with new neighbours situations. I would probably silently seethe for weeks before blowing up like the Incredible Hulk. Shock

Well done Mockery.

I don't understand why some people are being dicks on this thread. It can be daunting being assertive.

Well done op. For those nervous of confrontation it is a big step. So well done again.

Ignore the sour faced crew who obviously feel you haven't done enough.

And nipples are made to be flashed. Just ask Janet Jackson.

Amelie10 there, keeping up the fine AIBU tradition of manufacturing an excuse to be a dickhead out of nothing.

I don't understand why some people are being dicks on this thread

I think it's a missing of the point caused by being over-literal, or a failure to pick up on social cues, or a lack of empathy. Or they might just be dicks, I suppose.

Well done, OP. I hope you're still basking in the warm glow of the triumph of reason.

I imagine the hammering stopped because the neighbours were logging OP's nipples with 101?!

Can't believe MN has taught you to flash your nipples at your new neighbours to make them stop being anti-social.

I'm reading the wrong threads (but will absolutely be trying it next time there's trouble) Grin
