AIBU?

To have made a fuss over spilt coffee.

Sitting on bench on station platform. Have carefully placed full cup of coffee beside me. Train comes in. Lady beside me gets up, and as she does so her shoulder bag swings and hits my coffee, terminally. She's very apologetic and offers to get me another on the train. I'm very annoyed but say no, they only do nasty coffee on trains, it's fine, these things happen. She insists and says she'll bring me a coffee and asks for my carriage number, which I tell her.
Now I'm feeling bad because she was so nice about it and perhaps it was my fault for putting it down on the bench. Am I a snarky twat or does she owe me a coffee?

It was an accident - no-one's fault, but I think she is doing her best to rectify the situation, and you are being a bit snarky. If the train wasn't about to arrive, I imagine she'd have got you a direct replacement, but as the train has arrived, she can't do that, so a nasty train coffee is the best she can do.

She didn't have to offer to buy you one. You should have accepted the replacement graciously.

Anyway, SOME trains do nice coffee!

Well it was entirely your own fault so she doesn't owe you a coffee and you were rude to be huffy. You're right that train coffee is grim.

You're a snarky twat. It was an accident and she apologised offered to buy you another - it's not her fault that train coffee is like piss.

A bench is a dumb place to put coffee - she is nicer than me. Id have apologised, then left!

Posted too soon - I should have said that, as a caffeine addict myself, I understand completely why you feel the way you feel - I can't stand bad coffee either, and would be devastated if my cup of nice coffee was so cruelly denied to me!

I don't think you're snarky, I'd be the same! Coffee from the train station isn't that cheap!

The woman wasn't aware of her surroundings when she stood up otherwise she would have seen the coffee cup next to you!

Ditto the above, I'd have apologised and left.

It was just an accident, these things happen don't they. You didn't leave the coffee in the best place and she could of been more careful with her bag.

If she bring you a "nasty" train coffee then accept with a smile as she couldn't get your a like for like replace the coffee if the train had arrived.

Ok. I can't think of a train that does nice coffee. (In fact the integer week on Greater Anglia the buffet cat lady said they only had instant sachets but not to worry as it was so much nicer than the usual filter coffee Hmm ) meh, it was caffeine at least.

You should have been holding your coffee.

Surely you should have been holding your coffee? Benches are for sitting on.

Sorry, YABU. She's doing her best to make amends, it's not her fault you don't like train coffee! She's trying to show you that she's really sorry for what was, after all, a pretty minor accident.

She sounds like a nice person actually.

And 'devastated' and 'cruelly denied' are tongue-in-cheek - promise.

Though caffeine deprivation does make me somewhat tetchy, as the dses and dh know!

Gah. Other week. Buffet CAR lady. Although buffet cat lady sounds nice.

At risk of pissing you off more, the bench was a stoopid place to put your coffee. Just be glad it didn't spill on you or her says the woman who spilt beetroot soup on a man on a train.

It was an accident although you didn't leave you precious coffee in the best place.

Just accept the train coffee and forget about it. Tomorrow is another day

Benches are for things with arses. Your coffee cup should have been in your hand or on the floor between your feet. I would have apologised , but not offered a replacement so I think you were a bit rude tbh.

I glare at people who put their coffee down in stupid places. I'm amazed she offered to buy you another one.

I do agree also as a fellow coffee addict that I would have been totally gutted! but it still wasn't her fault

Accidents happen, she apologised, leave it there!

asks for my carriage number, which I tell her

I'm curious to know where you are travelling and how you know your carriage number. Off on your holidays?

But yes, YABU to have made a fuss over something which you are 60%+ responsible for.

It was an accident and I think you were a bit rude to her. I think she was actually very nice to offer to repalce it considering you're the one who left it unattended on a bench in the first place. Benches are for sitting, not resting cups of coffee.

Feeling appropriately chastened. I still don't think the bench was THAT stupid a place, and she should have been more careful with her bag (what if it had been a small child instead of the coffee cup?), but she hasn't brought me a replacement coffee so either she's thought better of it or she's been reading this thread. I suspect she may have changed her mind when she realised I was sitting in First Class.

If I'm at my local train station where there's only Costa Coffee and Uppercrust available, I will place the coffee cup on the bench but only because Costa's cups aren't very well insulated and burn my fingertips... If I put the cup between my feet then I'll forget about it and kick it over myself. The benches at the train station are separated by metal arms so the cup isn't technically in anybody's way!

If it had been a small child, I would hope she'd have offered to replace that, too.
