Smoking in a SMOKING AREA

Littlemissred21 · 13/07/2016 13:45

OK, out for lovely lunch with a friend yesterday. Sitting in a beer garden in a SMOKING area (ash tray thingy on Wall, ashtrays on tables)
My friend & I sitting at a table with no one else nearby enjoying our lunch.
During which time 2 other women come and sit at the table next to us.
Others waiting for their food, we finish ours & I light up. I'm sitting away from them, holding my fag in opposite hand to them, blowing smoke in the opposite direction. No children around, no food, no other people.
Hear them muttering something about smoking and tutting.
I turn and ask them if it's bothering them - blank looks from them. Me 'is this bothering you? Oh, I'll go and stand over there then shall I?' no response from them except a nervous laugh type thing.
I go and finish my fag a few feet further away & go carry on chatting to my friend.
Friend later says, oh I wouldn't have even acknowledged them.
Some people piss me right off.
Not like they were eating or anything.
Wish I would have said something like 'probably best not to sit in a SMOKING AREA if you don't like fucking smoking that much eh?' but maybe that might have been a bit too aggressive Shock
Why do some people have to be so bloody irritating? Next time maybe I'll have a cigar instead.
The more I think about it the more wound up I get. Can't stand muttering / tutting. If you have something to say why not just fucking say it!!!!!

Whilst it is a smoking area, on a nice day non smokers also like to sit out in beer gardens too without the awful smell, yabu.

I think YABU for all the attitude, there's no need for all the aggression!

YANBU to smoke in an area which is designated for smoking. I freaking hate smoking but, if the owner of the premises has decided they want to allow smoking in their garden, all patrons must deal with a garden full of smoke (or go elsewhere).

You seem friendly.

I don't think you were being unreasonable. You were sat in the right area, they chose to sit where they did. In a smoking area. They have no right to complain.
Yes, people like to sit outside on a sunny day, smokers and non smokers. Its up to the place to designate certain areas for both, so everyone is happy. One of our locals is by a river. The seating closest to the river, and the pub bulding, is non smoking, but the place which gets the most sun and is further away is the smoking area.
Oh, and I don't smoke, and wouldn't dream of complaining about someone who was in the designated area.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 13/07/2016 14:13

It's still a smoking area whether it's "a nice day" or not

What a bizarre way of looking at it- you are perfectly reasonable to smoke in the smoking area if it's cold or pissing down with rain and no one else wants to use it but as soon as the sun comes out you become unreasonable

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 13/07/2016 14:13

Maybe they'd like to join us in the pissing rain too eh Snowflakes? (is that your name because you're a special one btw?).

Sit inside if you don't like the smell, you may notice we've been banned from there for quite some time.

YADNBU OP!

Personally, I'd have lit another one straight up.......and I don't even smoke!

You can't sit in a smoking area and complain about people smoking

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/07/2016 14:16

So you were sitting in a designated smoking area and these women came over and sat in the smoking area and they were pissing and moaning that people were smoking.

Its a bit difficult nowadays isn't it. Too much aggression passive or otherwise on both sides here.

I think people need to accept that if you sit in a beer garden of a pub then there are going to be smokers around. I'm a non smoker but am willing to accept this.

You behaved reasonably and we're polite, well done for not snapping. Smoker here too, and often with non smokers in smoking area (including DH!). I will stand away from the table if sat with non smokers (I often like this as it gives the smokers some chat time that you wouldn't get in a big group!). Depending on how close the tables were together I might do this for non smokers eating too, even as a smoker I don't like smoke around when eating! There is no obligation to do it, but I do think it is polite, however non smokers in a smoking area need to wind the "you're disgusting" attitude down IMHO, especially if you have tried to be accomodating

I'm also a non smoker, but I don't expect the world to stop, just because I don't smoke.

Thank-you for replies, I'm really not an aggressive person (honest!) just people's attitudes wind me up.
I fully appreciate that lots of people don't like smoking and that's fine by me - just would make more sense for them to stay away from smoking areas!
The beer garden was empty - there were lots of other tables available but still they chose to sit in this area.
I am a considerate person, just a shame they obviously were not.
Sorry for my aggressive tone - obviously one of those days Wink

The problem is that now a lot of nice outside areas are unsuitable because of smokers, whose smoke spoils it for others. So YABU, sorry - it's a noxious habit because it has an unhealthy impact on those around you.

Outside in a beer garden FFS.
I would have told them to fuck off but I'm like that.

Ooooooo a smoking thread Grin

Piss off somewhere else if you don't like smoke. I don't even give a toss if that means it spoils your view.

Ah I miss smoking, I still go out when they do though and stand close.

Pinkheart5915 · 13/07/2016 14:53

Nice day and everyone wanting to sit in the garden or not it's still the smoking area!

I don't smoke but I wouldn't have a moan about somebody smoking in the smoking area.

Perhaps they weren't tutting at you personally OP.
Perhaps they were 'muttering about smoking and tutting' because they'd only just realised they'd chosen to sit in a smoking area and couldn't be arsed moving as you said they were waiting for food.
So annoyed at themselves for not noticing until you lit up? Not having a go at you for lighting up.

But foggy if you (the general you not personally you) choose as a non smoker to sit in a designated smoking area then you are choosing to passively inhale smoke and you are choosing to an environment that will have an unhealthy Impact on yourself.

If you don't want to have that impact then choose a venue that does not have a designated smoking area.

On the other side a smoker should not smoke in a non smoking area.

GoblinLittleOwl · 13/07/2016 14:56

As apparently the only person in the British Isles who likes the smell of cigarette smoke (non-smoker) I think you were perfectly reasonable and very considerate. People just love being self-righteous. 'Gardens filled with smoke.' Really?

YANBU OP

But some people will be determined to be huffy and knicker twisted at the mere sight of a cigarette. You were in a designated smoking area, crack on I say!
